No. 1 Tritons too much for Jacks to handle

Box Score
LA JOLLA – They put up a fight, but the Jacks lost steam in the second half and were unable to stop the top-ranked team in the nation, falling 74-49 to the Tritons Saturday night.

With the loss, Humboldt State drops to 12-4 overall and 8-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, while UC San Diego extends its winning streak to 18 games, a program best, and stands on top of the conference with a 12-0 record against CCAA opponents.

UC San Diego is the No. 1-ranked team in the nation for a reason. The powerful Tritons came out firing in the second half, shooting 46 percent from within the arc, 60 percent from downtown, and proved too much for the Jacks to handle.

Four of the Tritons' starters scored in double figures, led by Daisy Feder's 20 points and Lauren Freidenberg's double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Chelsea Carlisle and Erin Dautremont also scored in double digits, scoring 14 and 13 points, respectively.

HSU struggled from the field, shooting 28 percent from the field and only 15 percent from beyond the arc. Lisa Petty was the only Jack player to score in double digits, racking up 13 points on the night. Bree Halsey collected a game- and season-best 16 rebounds off the boards, just one shy of her career best.

UCSD attacked from the get-go, grabbing an eight-point lead early in the first half. Although the Jacks weren't shooting their best effort, they remained in the game and went into halftime trailing by five points.

Whitney Howard struck first for HSU in the start of the second half to cut the lead to three. Petty tied the game up less than a minute later off an assist from Halsey, giving the Jacks hope of grabbing the lead for the first time in the contest.

For the first ten minutes of the half, the Jacks would close in on the Tritons, but UCSD had a tight grip on its lead and was not ready to lose its winning streak. Things took a turn for the worse with just over eight minutes left to play when the Tritons went on a 15-point run to give UCSD a 24-point cushion. Adding fuel to the Triton's fire, the Jacks went on a scoring drought, only scoring four points in the last eight minutes of play, all of which were from shots from the line.

Humboldt State heads back out on the road next weekend to take on Cal State Stanislaus and Chico State as the Jacks start the second half of conference play.
