Halsey breaks rebounding record in blowout win

Box Score
TURLOCK – It took a few minutes for Humboldt State to get going after finding itself in a 9-0 hole, but that didn't stop the Jacks to grab a win and break a record in the same night. Bree Halsey broke the all-time career rebound record to help lift the Jacks 82-63 over Cal State Stanislaus—the highest score HSU has posted this year.

The victory seals the sweep against the Warriors for the Jacks, ties the all-time series against CSUS at 29-29, and puts HSU 13-4 overall, 9-4 in California Collegiate Athletic Association action. CSUS drops to 5-12 overall and 2-11 in conference.

"It's huge to beat a team twice in conference," said head coach Joddie Gleason. "It's always tough since it's such a competitive conference."

Cal State Stanislaus only had seven players suited up due to injuries and grade issues, missing the CCAA's top scorer and rebounder Theresa Henderson, but that didn't stop the Warriors from putting up a fight for the Jacks, going on a nine-point run to start the game.

"It was a combination of us not hitting shots and CSUS attacking hard to the basket," said Gleason. "That's a bad combination."

Kayla Williams, who didn't start due to a knee injury, made an impact off the bench and scored first for Humboldt State. Williams finished the night with 20 points to lead a group of four Jacks scoring in double figures. Lisa Petty added 14 points, while Caitie Richards scored 12 points to also contribute to the Jacks success.

"Kayla came in and scored so we were able to relaxe a little bit," said Gleason. "We also tightened up defensively which helps create offense."

Not only did Halsey finish with 12 points on the night, she added eight rebounds to break Humboldt State's career rebounding record—which she had no idea she was even close to breaking—previously established by Dawn Miner in 1993 with 830 rebounds.

"It's obviously a huge honor for Bree tonight to break the record," said Gleason. "Miner was a great player at Humboldt State, and a player I played against and always tried to stop. Bree's very humble and didn't even know she had broken it. She has a great workhorse mentality and I'm really happy for her since she's put in the time and work to get to where she is."

Halsey now has 833 career rebounds and nine regular season games left to play in. This season alone, Halsey has grabbed 161 missed shots off the boards to put her in second amongst the CCAA's top rebounders.

"It's important for me to play defense and rebound," said Halsey. "I feel like getting physical, putting a body on someone and being able to elevate  and grab a board is huge for me. It's what I do. My goal every game is to show up and grab a lot of rebounds."

Something struck a chord for the Jacks after letting Cal State Stanislaus go ahead 13-2 and the Jacks began to battle back. Danielle Gaumer tied the game at 24-24 with five minutes left before halftime and just 30 seconds later hit a jump shot to give HSU its first lead of the game, which the Jacks extended to nine points to end the half.

Since grabbing the lead, Humboldt State had found its momentum and came out firing in the second half to grab a 16-point lead in the first three minutes of action. HSU never let go of its lead, even extending it to 21-points, but the Warriors continued to battle despite only have three substitutions.

Lauren Godde stepped up for the Warriors, grabbing the only double-double of the game with 21 points and 13 rebounds. Jamiez Terrell and Devin Brown both scored in double digits for the Warriors, registering 19 points and 10 points, respectively.

HSU travels to rival Chico State to face the team who lost to Sonoma State 57-45 tonight and lost to the Jacks 72-62 earlier this season.

"There's even more motivation for them to come out and take it out on us," said Gleason. "It's tough to win at Chico so we have to bring our A game. They're a quality team so you have to make them work to get buckets, you can't make it easy for them."
