CHICO – Humboldt State struck first, but Chico State held the Jacks to just 26 points in the first half while shooting 46 percent from the field, giving HSU a tough climb to overcome. The Wildcats seemed determined after losing to Sonoma State the night before and walked away with a 90-67 victory over HSU, keeping the Jacks winless at Chico State since the 1994-95 season.
With the loss, Humboldt State drops to 13-5 overall and 9-5 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Chico State improves to 11-7 on the season and 8-6 in conference action.
Caitie Richards sunk a three-pointer in the first minute of play to put the Jacks up on the board first, but the lead didn't last long. The Wildcats went on a 10-point run give themselves a 14-point cushion with just under nine minutes left to play in the first half. The Jacks, led by
Lisa Petty's game-high 17 points, continued to battle, but found themselves trailing 40-26 heading into halftime.
"We just got beat at every facet of the game," said head coach
Joddie Gleason. "They came out and defended well and killed us on rebounds. It seemed like anytime we did force a tough shot, they would get the o-board and kick it for a three or finish the and-one."
Gleason knew her team needed to make it hard for Chico State to make shots, but the Wildcats pushed through and went 34-for-69 on the night, led by Courtney Harrison with 15 points. Caressa Williams and McKenzie Dalthrop also scored in double-figures for Chico State, scoring 14 and 10 points, respectively.
"They were firing on all cylinders," said Gleason. "When we played man defense, they executed their stuff to perfection, and then we went zone and we couldn't stop them off the drive nor get the rebound. It just seemed like no matter what we did, they would counter it."
Bree Halsey broke the career rebounding record last night against Cal State Stanislaus, but tonight the Jacks struggled to secure shots off the boards. Halsey grabbed six rebounds, but Chico State out-rebounded HSU 44-to-28, led by Caressa Williams' seven rebound effort.
Courtney Hamilton—who finished with nine points—started the second half by sinking a shot from beyond the arc to put the Wildcats ahead by 17 points.
HSU kept playing, but couldn't break through a double-digit Chico State lead, even finding itself trailing by 27-points to the Wildcats with just under four minutes left to play, and ultimately fell to the Wildcats.
The Jacks return home next weekend as they host Cal State East Bay and Cal State Monterey Bay on Thursday and Saturday, respectively, both with a 5:30 p.m. tipoff time.
"We've been on the road seven-of-nine games," said Gleason. "It's been brutal and the players are tired, and that's not the reason we lost tonight, but we'll be happy to be home in February."
