Box Score ARCATA — It was one of those days Saturday in Redwood Bowl, the kind when everything you do seems to go wrong. But even more troubling for the Humboldt State football team is the fact that the Jacks have had two of those days on consecutive weekends after cruising along for the first four weeks.
On Saturday, the Lumberjacks gave up yardage, the ball, and a piece of their collective pride in a 42-14 Great Northwest Athletic Conference loss to Western Oregon, a harsh followup to their 31-3 loss to Central Washington last week. WOU quarterback Cody VonAppen used his arm and legs to get the job done, throwing for one touchdown and running for three to help the Wolves improve to 3-3 overall and 3-2 in the GNAC. Humboldt State fell to 4-2 and 3-2 in league.
"This is beyond disappointing," Humboldt State head coach
Rob Smith said. "We're not the same team that we were the first four weeks of the season. There's something going on, and it's up to me to figure out what it is and correct it."
Turnovers were going on Saturday, with the team that came into the game ranked 10th nationally in turnover margin handing it over to the Wolves three times. The first came with 12 minutes, 34 seconds on the opening quarter game clock when HSU quarterback
Alex Rump was intercepted for the first time this season.
Three plays after the Jacks gained their first possession of the game deep in their own territory, Rump attempted a pass over the middle that was batted up in the air by WOU defensive tackle Sipili Tuigamalala. The 6-foot, 2-inch, 330-pound lineman then corralled the ball and barreled eight yards into the endzone to give his team a 7-0 lead.
Western Oregon scored twice more in the opening quarter, first taking advantage of Lumberjack
Victor Spencer's fumble on a punt return to set up Joe Harris' 15-yard touchdown run and then putting together a 9-play, 65-yard drive that ended with VonAppen's 3-yard scoring pass to Lucas Gonzalves.
Humboldt State scored early in the second quarter with a 10-play, 75-yard drive that appeared go give the Jacks momentum.
Nick Ricciardulli burst up the middle for the final 12 yards, cutting the Wolves' lead to 21-7,
VonAppen and crew quickly regained control, however, taking only 2 minutes, 31 seconds to move the ball 94 yards. He finished the march himself, rushing 16 yards for a touchdown that opened the Wolves' lead to 28-7.
WOU forced Humboldt State to punt following three quick, unsuccessful plays on the ensuing possession, and again took advantage of a Lumberjack error.
Chris Campbell's boot traveled only 19 yards, and a personal foul on the Jacks tacked on 15 more yards, positioning Western Oregon on the HSU 28-yard line. From there, VonAppen needed only two plays to put up more points, the first coming on a 25-yard pass connection with Mark Moore and the second his own three-yard run into the endzone.
On their next possession, the Lumberjacks again were forced to punt after Rump sustained a hard hit that resulted in a game-ending arm injury. But the Jacks' defense stopped the Wolves after four plays, and Spencer's 27-yard punt return helped set up the final score of the first half, a 12-yard pass from back-up quarterback
Casey Mintz to
Marquise Deadwiler that cut the WOU lead to 35-14 at halftime.
The second half lacked the action of the first, dragging on as the teams traded punts seven times. RJ Williams' interception and 40-yard return of a Mintz pass set up the Wolves' final score, a 17-yard scramble by VonAppen with just over two minutes remaining.
"We had a bad performance across the board," Smith said. "We had poor execution on offense, poor tackling on defense, and a horrible kicking game. This is as bad as it gets."
Along with throwing two interceptions, HSU quarterbacks Rump and Mintz were sacked five times after going down only once in the season's first five games. Another streak that ended was Ricciardulli's five consecutive games of 100-yard plus rushing. The junior netted 78 yards in 18 carries.
Humboldt State heads out on the road this week, traveling to Southern California to face Azusa Pacific in another GNAC game at 6 p.m. Saturday.
