Jacks hit the road again, continue conference play

ARCATA — Humboldt State heads back out on the road after a successful home stand, facing two California Collegiate Athletic Association squads. Coming off a 48-45 win over Cal Poly Pomona to start conference on a high note, the Jacks will look to continue building momentum in the CCAA standings over the weekend.

The Jacks first travel to Cal State Stanislaus, taking on the Warriors Friday at 5:30 p.m., before challenging rival school Chico State on Saturday, also at 5:30 p.m.

Head-to-Head
Last year, HSU completed the sweep against the Warriors with a 76-60 win at home and a 82-63 victory on the road to put the all-time series at an even 29-29. Chico State, on the other hand, has held the upper hand in the all-time series for some time now at 59-19, but the Jacks have been making progress. Last season, HSU beat Chico State 72-62 at home, but fell in a close 62-60 loss on the road.

Injury Report
DJ Martel—who had been sidelined due to a head injury—is cleared to play this weekend, it's just a matter of her getting on the same page as everyone else, which head coach Joddie Gleason is confident she can do.

Gleason Gabs
"A primary focus of ours this week is rebounding. It continues to be something we're trying to improve on. CSU Stanislaus does a good job hitting the glass so we need to limit their second chances. ... CSUS has a new coach this year so it's a little bit of an unknown with their style of play, which is always a concern. ... With Chico State, historically it's been tough to match their athleticism across the board. They tend to be smaller and more athletic than some of the teams we've faced so far. We need to force them to take tough shots and limit our fouls sending them to the line, which they're very good at. It's going to be a challenge. ... Chico State is very balanced in scoring. They don't rely on just one or two players so it makes it tougher to defend. ... Synchro Bull, one of Chico's top scorers, is recovering from knee injury and hasn't played yet, but I have a feeling she's going to play this weekend. ... We have so many young players still learning the system. A lot of times they don't use the offense, they just run it. We need them to not think so much about it and just play. We're confident they can get there though. ... Ali [Orlich] is fearless. She comes from a basketball family and knows the game so well. She's been a great resource for us. Jain [Tuey] is playing with more confidence now that she knows the system better. The game is so fast so it takes a while and you get beat up a little, but then you figure it out. It's sink or swim. You either figure it out and swim or you don't and sink. ... It still feels really early to start conference. Every year it seems like we're away in the first weekend of conference. We're going to two tough places to play at early in conference. ... We're battle tested and have had more games so hopefully that will be better for us. We'll be ready."
