Lumberjacks complete sweep over Broncos

Box Score
POMONA — Picking up right where they left off just two weeks ago, Humboldt State and Cal Poly Pomona were ready for another battle. Despite surrendering a quick lead to the Broncos, the visiting Lumberjacks fought their way to a 68-61 victory over the host squad.

The HSU win completes the sweep for the 2012-13 season over CPP, putting the Jacks at 6-3 overall, 3-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. With the loss, the Broncos fall to 2-4 overall and 1-3 in conference action.

"It's huge to get the sweep against Cal Poly Pomona," said head coach Joddie Gleason. "Obviously we're happy to be 3-1 in conference this early and we know how important a sweep is when it comes to tiebreakers looking down the line, which they had on us last year."

Two Lumberjacks finished with double figures in scoring, led by Lisa Petty with her third double-double of the season. Petty ended the night with a game-high 20 points and a career-high 15 rebounds. Kelly Kime went 6-for-9 in shooting and scored 14 points before grabbing her fifth foul.

"I was giving Kelly a hard time before the game, telling her we needed her to get some points and not be just a facilitator," said Gleason. "She got points for us in the first half and although she suffered foul trouble in second half, she helped us execute and did some other good things for us on offense. She definitely was a key."

For Cal Poly Pomona, three players scored in double digits, led by JJ Judge, who matched Petty's 20 points. Judge also grabbed 10 rebounds to complete the only double-double for the Broncos. Ashley Boggs added 15 points, followed by Rachel Hatch with 11 points.

Right from the start, Cal Poly Pomona was ready for its home opener. The Broncos won the tip off and scored the first basket of the game just seconds later to put CPP up 2-0.

After struggling to find the net on shots from beyond the arc, Petty sunk a three-pointer to give the Jacks their first lead of the game at 3-2.

With 8:40 left in the first half, Kime found all net from distance to tie the game at 16-16. The Jacks proceeded to go on a 10-0 run, with Jain Tuey finishing a three-point shot to put HSU up 32-18, the largest lead of the contest.

Judge broke the 12-point run with a three-pointer of her own to cut the lead to nine at 32-21. Cydnie Jones added two more pointsfor the Broncos after stealing the ball from the Jacks for a fast break opportunity, ending the half with a 32-23 score in favor of HSU.

Coming out of halftime, the Broncos looked determined to get back in the game and started the second half with the first basket. Caitie Richards gave the Jacks back a 10-point lead, but Lauren Goecke answered right back with a layup to initiate a 6-0 run for CPP.

Hoping to stop the Broncos' momentum, Tiana Maxwell finished some key free throws to stop the run and put the Jacks ahead 38-32, with still a lot of time left in the contest.

"This game is some times such a mental game," said Gleason. "I think we really held our composure when they made those runs. I told them at timeout, 'We need to have someone step up and make a play on offense.' And they did. Tiana had prob one of best games she's had for us. She got rebounds and was active on offense to get us extra looks. She also made some clutch free throws."

Cal Poly Pomona went back on a multiple-point run to tie the game at 38-38 with 12:33 left in regulation, proving the Broncos were not going to just hand the victory over to the visiting squad.

Petty put the Jacks back in front with a two-point shot. Amanda Kunst finished four back-to-back points off a layup and two shots from the free throw line, followed by a three-point shot from Jain Tuey, to give HSU a nine-point cushion at 47-38.

Coming down the stretch with less than five minutes left in the contest, Humboldt State led 60-51, but Judge made four free shots in a row off a personal foul and a technical to bring the game within five points.

Richards answered right back with a perfectly timed shot from the perimeter to extend HSU's lead to eight points, giving the Jacks some spark.

"When they cut it to five and Caitie got the three, it was huge," said Gleason. "One of benefits of being on road, I think, is that our team chemistry is really good. As a group, everyone was invested in the game and happy when their teammates were making plays."

The lead didn't last long, however, as the Broncos brought the game within one possession, just down two points at 63-61 with 30 seconds left on the clock.

The last seconds seemed to last forever as the Broncos fouled the Jacks, hoping to get rebounds off missed free throws. Tuey missed her first of two shots, but finished the second to put the Jacks up by three.

Boggs had the chance to tie the game with a shot from range, but was slightly off target and Petty came up with the huge board to regain possession. Trying to get the ball back, the Broncos sent Petty to the line where she finished both of her two shots.

With :01 left in the game, Danielle Gaumer was sent to the line and finished her shots with ease, giving the Jacks their 68-61 victory over the Broncos.

"It's a big win, especially going into break," said Petty. "It gives us momentum and a little bit of confidence. We battled tough, they went on a big run at the end but we stuck it through."

Humboldt State will take some time off for finals and holidays before returning to Lumberjack Arena for some non-conference play on December 29 at 7 p.m. against Simpson University.
