Overtime loss breaks Lumberjacks' hearts

Box Score
POMONA – Humboldt State started with a strong nine-point run, but Cal Poly Pomona proved it was not going to just roll over for the Jacks. The two teams continued to teeter back-and-forth with each team grabbing double-digit leads, ultimately sending the game into overtime after a little controversy.

With the score tied at 55-55, Kayla Williams was just off the mark with her shot from the perimeter, but Bree Halsey grabbed it off the board and was fouled on the put-back. The officials discussed the matter, deciding there was a shot-clock violation before the foul on Halsey to send the game into extra time. The Broncos outscored the Jacks in overtime 16-4 to come away with the 75-59 victory, leaving HSU with a split on its last regular season road trip.

Humboldt State drops to 17-7 overall, 13-7 in California Collegiate Athletic Association action, while Cal Poly Pomona improve to the same record of 17-7 overall, 13-7 in conference to once again put the two teams tied in the conference leader boards.

Caitie Richards and Lisa Petty combined for 40 of the Jacks' 59 points. Richards was on fire, shooting 50 percent from both the field and beyond the arc, finishing with 20 points. Petty shot an impressive 6-for-9 from the field and a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line to grab 20 points and completed the double-double with 11 rebounds.

Four Broncos finished with double-figures, led by an impressive double-double feat from Megan Ford. Ford finished with 19 points and 16 rebounds to help CPP out-rebound Humboldt State 40-36. Charlene Popoff ended the night with 16 points, followed by Sarah Semenero with 15 and J.J. Judge's 11 points.

Petty put the Jacks on the board first, after Richards stole the ball from Ford. Humboldt State went on an unanswered nine-point run, capped by a three from Richards and another layup from Petty, and didn't allow the Broncos to score in the run of play until seven minutes into the contest.

At one point, Humboldt State grabbed an 11-point cushion—its largest lead of the game—but slowly saw its lead start to dwindle as the Broncos found their rhythm and went on a seven-point run to cut the lead to four points. CPP took the lead heading into halftime after Judge sunk two three-pointers to end the half 33-28.

The Broncos came out determined to play, sinking their first two baskets of the second half to give Cal Poly Pomona a nine-point lead. Richards answered with two points for the Jacks, but Jennifer Bryant sunk a shot on the perimeter to give the Broncos their largest lead of the night at 10 points.

Finding some motivation, Humboldt State tied the game at 40-40 after going on a 10-point run, led by a pair of three-pointers from Richards and Williams. The battle continued as the score was tied up five times. Down by two, Petty finished a layup off a pass from Richards to tie the game 55-55 at the end of regulation.

With emotions running high off the confusion at the end of regulation and feeling as if the Jacks' were robbed of a chance of taking the lead, Cal Poly Pomona took a four-point lead off two free throws and a jumper from Popoff. Petty answered by cutting the lead in half, but the Jacks defense force the Broncos out of their game as CPP went on a seven-point run to grab a 66-57 lead with just over a minute left to play.

One again, Petty answered with two points of her own, but Petty was the only HSU player to score in overtime, making both of the Jacks two baskets from the field. Desperation kicked in for the Jacks as they fouled to try to gain possession of the ball, but the Broncos shot 11-for-14 from the line in extra time, ultimately ending the game with a 16-point victory.
Humboldt State returns home for its final two games of the regular season against top-ranked UC San Diego—who has already clinched the regular season title—and Cal State San Bernardino. The Jacks have already secured a playoff berth, but are battling to stay in the top four in order to host the first round on Feb. 28.
