Bats aren't enough to pull off complete upset for Jacks

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3
ARCATA – Humboldt State and No. 4-ranked Chico State finished three games in one day after Friday's doubleheader was postponed until Sunday morning due to weather conditions. A grand slam from Dani Randall had tied the game at 12-12 to take it to extra innings, with the Wildcats blasting the Jacks 24-15 to end the game after 10 innings. The 'Cats then went on to sweep Sunday's doubleheader games, 9-7 and 15-7.

With the losses, HSU drops to 7-10 overall and 1-7 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Chico State improves to 12-3 overall and 6-2 in conference action.

Chico State powered 10 hits, scoring 12 runs, in the top of the 10th of the unfinished game. The Jacks struggled to complete two outs, giving the Wildcats the opportunity to rally and rack up runs. Humboldt State finally grabbed the third out, but found itself in a huge hole heading to the plate.

The Jacks were able to pick up three runs in the bottom of the 10th, but couldn't rally enough for a comeback, falling 24-15.

Looking to regroup, Humboldt State jumped ahead 2-0 in the bottom of the first. Kirsten Nouzovsky started the Jacks off with a single through the left side. Alicia Reid, who posted three home runs on Friday, drilled the ball over the left field fence to give the Jacks the lead.

Chico State answered in the top of the third, scoring five runs off four hits and a Lumberjack error. With bases loaded, Hailey Stockman sent one sailing over the fence for a grand slam. The Wildcats scored one more run before Humboldt State could grab the three outs to end the inning.

Reid started the third inning for the Jacks, getting on first off ball four. A wild pitch gave Reid the opportunity to advance to second and reached third off a single from Chrissy Stalf. With two outs, found the hole just to the left of center for a two RBI single, putting the game within a run.

At the top of the sixth, Chico State increased their lead off four hits, scoring four runs. In the same situation as the top of the third with bases loaded, Stockman blasted the ball over the fence once again for a four-run homer.

Heading into the bottom of the seventh down 9-4, the Jacks put their rally caps on. With Nouzovsky and Reid on first and second, Stalf sent a line drive just out of the reach of Chico State's second baseman to send Nouzovsky in for the score. Courtney Hiatt singled through the left side to load the bases with Randall stepping up to the plate. Randall couldn't repeat with a grand slam to tie up the game and send the third game of the series into extra innings, instead singling to right field with two RBIs. HSU couldn't keep the rally alive, ending the game at 9-7.

Chico State struck first in the nightcap, scoring in the first inning of play. With two 'Cats on base, Diana Payan doubled to right field, trading places with the runner on second to give Chico State the 1-0 lead.

Nouzovsky responded for the Jacks, sending the 13th home run in the series for Humboldt State over the fence. The next three batters for the Jacks couldn't catch some of Nouzovsky's heat, going down in order.

Stockman sent her third home run of the day out of the park in the top of the third to put the Wildcats up 2-1. Putting the Jacks out in order in the bottom of the third, Chico State took the plate to start an explosive fourth inning. The first two batters for Chico State sent the ball sailing over the fence to put the Wildcats up 4-1 with no outs. Six more hits and six more runs put the 'Cats up 10-1 heading into the bottom of the fourth.

Needing to score two runs to avoid the mercy rule, Humboldt State put its rally caps on once again. Not going down without a fight, the Jacks responded with six runs off four hits to keep the game going. Stalf started the inning by beating the throw to first to grab her first hit of the game. Randall blasted her fourth home run of the series over the fence to cut the lead to seven.

With bases loaded and only one out, Sammi Gilbert stepped into the batter's box, only to be hit by a pitch, sending Sarah Fox to home from third. Nouzovsky flied out, but picked up an RBI after Tonya Walker tagged the base before scoring. Reid was walked to load up the bases once more for the Jacks. In her second at-bat of the inning, Stalf doubled down the left field line, sending in two runners for HSU.

After surrendering a run to Chico State in the top of the fifth, Humboldt State found itself trailing 11-7 with three chances at the plate to try to grab a split in the four-game series. The Jacks had the opportunity to grab runs in the bottom of the sixth when they had bases loaded. Already down two outs, Hiatt couldn't find a hole in the outfield, flying out to end the inning.

In the top of the seventh, the Wildcats added four runs off three hits to put the pressure on the Jacks in their final appearance at the plate. Feeling the pressure, however, Humboldt State couldn't pull off a rally and went down in order to complete finish the series with only one victory.

The Jacks travel to Sonoma State to take on the Seawolves for a pair of doubleheaders on Friday, March 3 and Saturday, March 4. Friday's doubleheader action will start at noon with Saturday's contests beginning at 11 a.m.
