Box Score ARCATA — Humboldt State looked like the better team in the first half of Saturday night's showdown against CSU Monterey Bay, even after the Jacks found themselves trailing by one point at the break. The Lumberjacks removed all doubt in the second half, pulling away to a 65-51 win.
The win gives HSU a 14-6 overall record on the season, 10-6 California Collegiate Athletic Association record and and impressive 7-2 mark at home. Cal State Monterey Bay dropped to 14-5 overall, 11-4 in conference games.
The Jacks let a nine-point lead quickly slip away in the final few minutes of the first half as the Otters went on a 11-point run to grab their first lead of the game.
"We played poorly at the end there, but knew we were capable of executing in the second half," head coach Jodie Gleason.
Humboldt State went on a game-changing 18-0 run in the first eight minutes of the second half to put Gleason's words into action and give the Jacks control of the game once again.
"We talked about hitting the boards at halftime," said Gleason. "We were giving up some offensive rebounds that really hurt us. With some heady play by Kayla (Williams) and others we were able to extend the lead early in the second half."
Junior
Patrice Saindon sparked the Jacks, coming off the bench to pace the HSU defense. Saindon locked down the Otters, creating three turnovers and scoring five points during HSU's 18-0 surge.
"Patrice is a great defender and hungry for playing time," teammate
Kayla Williams said. "She never slows down."
After being the only Jack to score in double figures on Thursday against Cal State East Bay, Williams once again led HSU in scoring with 17 points, but had three other teammates join her.
Bree Halsey posted the only double-double of the night with 14 rebounds and 10 points.
Whitney Howard scored 15 points and
Lisa Petty rounded out the group with 14 points.
CSU Monterey Bay could not find a rhythm from the floor all night, but struggled the most in the second half, shooting 15 percent from both the field and from beyond the arc. HSU held the Otters' leading scorer, Brandi Stephens to just four points in 22 minutes of play.
"We played great defense all night," said Halsey.
Turnovers played a big part in HSU's runaway victory, as the team registered 15 total steals on the night—six by Saindon alone—leading to easy fast break buckets and a crowd-pleasing win at home.
Next week the Lumberjacks are home again, facing off against CSU Dominguez Hills on Feb. 9 and Cal State Los Angeles on Feb. 11. Both games tip-off at 5:30 p.m. in Lumberjack Arena. Saturday's game against the Golden Eagles will be the Play 4Kay night to spread breast cancer awareness. Fans are encouraged to wear pink.
