Reid breaks CCAA record, Jacks split with Coyotes

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
SAN BERNARDINO – Alicia Reid has already hit more than two home runs in a single day, but not in a single game ... until today. Reid sent four homers sailing over the fence at Cal State San Bernardino—breaking a California Collegiate Athletic Association record—in the nightcap of Friday's doubleheader, but couldn't lift the Jacks over the Coyotes.

Humboldt State settled with a split in its first two games against CSUSB, winning 9-8 in the first game and falling 15-11 in the nightcap. The results put the Jacks at 9-22 overall and 3-19 in the CCAA, while the Coyotes stand 12-17 on the season and 8-12 in conference.

GAME TWO

In the first inning of the day, the Jacks looked ready to compete and grab a win, plating four runs in their first appearance at the plate. Reid reached on after being hit by a pitch and advanced to third when Kirsten Nouzovsky doubled up the middle. Chrissy Stalf walked to load up the bases and Courtney Hiatt moved everyone up a base, scoring Reid, after taking a rogue pitch to her body.

With one out, Felicia Viveiros grounded out to second, but allowed Nouzovsky to run in and put the Jacks up 2-0. Allison McKibbon singled to right field and picked up two RBIs when Stalf and Hiatt tagged home plate, giving HSU a 4-0 lead after the first half inning.

Humboldt State held Cal State San Bernardino scoreless until the bottom of the third. Although the Jacks didn't surrender a hit, the Coyotes put themselves up on the scoreboard by taking advantage of wild pitching. The Coyotes took the lead in their next chance at the plate, adding five runs to put the score at 6-4. CSUSB capitalized off three hits and two Lumberjack errors.

The Jacks answered in their next opportunity on offense, scoring three runs to take the lead back. Nouzovsky and Dani Randall each walked to put the tying runs on base for HSU. Hiatt doubled to send Nouzovsky in and advance Randall to third. McKibbon grabbed two more RBIs with a double to right center, giving Humboldt State a one-run lead before the Coyotes grabbed the third out.

CSUSB tied the game up in the bottom of the fourth off two hits, but the Jacks played some tight defense to keep not find themselves trailing again. With one out and bases loaded, Stalf connected with Hiatt to get the runner out at the plate, before Kayla Evans assisted the third out, collecting a ground ball and threw it to Stalf.

McKibbon (3-for-4 in the first game) started the top of the seventh for the Jacks, singling to left field. Sammi Gilbert pinch ran for her and advanced to third off Andrea Chavez's single. Tonya Walker followed with an RBI single, allowing Gilbert to give the Jacks the lead once again. Reid also singled to score Chavez, giving the Jacks an insurance run.

Up two runs, Stalf entered the circle for the Jacks and saved the game by only giving up one run. The Coyotes had a chance to win the game with two runners on base, but once HSU's defense wouldn't budge and held onto the victory.

In the nightcap, the Jacks surrendered 10 runs in the bottom of the fifth, which ended up costing them the game. Humboldt State had dominated the first four innings, grabbing a 6-2 lead heading into the fifth off eight hits—including back-to-back home runs over center field from Reid.

The Jacks fell apart on defense in the bottom of the fifth, giving up the 10 runs off six hits (two of which were home runs), five walks and two defensive errors before Jennifer Sizemore was able to strike out a Coyote looking to end the inning.

Reid stepped up to the plate in the top of the sixth and sent the ball sailing once more over the fence, this time at left field. Nouzovsky and Stalf each made their way on base with singles and McKibbon took ball four to join them on base. Randall singled to left field, sending Nouzovsky in for the score.

CSUSB added three additional runs in the bottom of the sixth off three hits, including a two-run homer, to add some pressure to the Jacks as they headed to their last chance at bat. Down 15-9, Humboldt State needed to plate six runs just to keep the game alive.

With one out, Walker walked to reach on base. Still feeling hot, Reid (4-for-5 in the second game) repeated her three previous hits with another home run over left field to cut the Coyotes' lead to four runs. Despite Reid being on fire, the Jacks couldn't plate any more runs, resulting in the 15-11 defeat.

Humboldt State has two more chances to grab much needed victories with Saturday's doubleheader action against Cal State San Bernardino, beginning at 11 a.m.
