Jacks drop two of three games in Tournament of Champions

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 TURLOCK – In the first round of the Tournament of Champions, Humboldt State dropped two games to one, grabbing a 7-3 win in its second game of the day. Central Washington beat the Jacks 3-1 in the opener and Hawaii Pacific handed HSU a 9-1 loss to end the day.

With the results, Humboldt State stands at 11-26 on the season and will look to pick up some wins in the second half of pool play on Saturday.

CWU kept the Jacks scoreless for six innings, including robbing Dani Randall of a home run in the third, but Courtney Hiatt prevented the shutout in the Jacks last chance at bat when she knocked the ball over the fence at right center.

The Wildcats scored one run in the top of the fourth and added two additional runs in the sixth, off a homer of their own, and outhit the Jacks 9-to-4.

Humboldt State came out ready to play in the second game, plating two runs in the top of the third to grab a 2-0 lead. Chrissy Stalf hit her fourth home run of the season with Serena Aragones already on base to start the scoring for the Jacks.

After each being hit by a pitch, Walker and Stalf ran home from third and second off a triple from Hiatt to put HSU up 4-0 in the top of the fourth. The Jacks continued to keep NNU scoreless while adding two more runs in the top of the fifth to grab a 6-0 lead. With Randall and Sammi Gilbert on base, Alicia Reid drilled a double to left field to send in the two runners.

The Jacks had a chance to take the game out of Northwest Nazarene's hands in the top of the sixth, but could only score one run off an RBI single from Randall.

Despite the seven-run cushion, the Jacks gave up three runs in the bottom of the seventh before grabbing the third putout to secure the 7-3 victory.

The third game started later than it was originally scheduled, waiting for the game before to finish. Hawaii Pacific stepped out ahead in the first inning, scoring five runs off just two hits.

HSU responded in the third when Stalf singled up the middle to send Aragones in for the score. The run proved to be the only offensive production for the Jacks as they surrendered four more runs to end the game after five innings due to the mercy rule.

The Jacks continue pool play Saturday morning, taking on Notre Dame de Namur and Grand Canyon—unless the looming rain has other plans—starting at 10 a.m.
