TURLOCK – Humboldt State blasted Notre Dame de Namur 8-0 in four and a half innings, picking up its second shut out of the season, before taking on Grand Canyon. After coming from behind to bring the game within one run, Grand Canyon plated two runs before the home plate ump called the game after six innings, ending the game at 10-7 in favor of the 'Lopes.
The split puts Humboldt State at 12-28 overall as the Jacks conclude pool play at the Tournament of Champions in Turlock, with the next round being released later Saturday.
With bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the second,
Tonya Walker singled to the far left, sending in two runners to put the Jacks on the board.
Chrissy Stalf's bat was hot at the plate as the All-American went 6-for-7 on the day, including 3-for-3 in the first game and registered an RBI single to add another notch to the Jacks' score column.
Courtney Hiatt followed with an RBI single of her own and
Alicia Reid singled with bases loaded to put the score at 6-0.
Dani Randall added the seventh run before NDNU could grab the third out to end the inning.
Finding itself heading toward the positive side of the mercy rule, HSU was determined to keep its second shut out of the season and made some clutch stops on defense. In the top of the fourth,
Alyssa Castillo initiated a double play by throwing the runner at first out at second before
Sammi Gilbert tossed the ball to Stalf for the second out.
Stalf drilled a rocket over the fence at right center in the bottom of the fourth to put the pressure on the Argonauts to score just one run to keep the game alive.
Andrea Chavez grabbed the first two putouts of the inning to give the Jacks hope of grabbing the early victory.
Gilbert's throw to Stalf was just off target, allowing the Argonaut to put a runner on first, followed by a single from Taylor Williams. Wanting to grab the victory and end the game, Castillo collected a ground ball hit right back at her and connected with Stalf to secure the 8-0 victory.
Grand Canyon followed HSU's first game performance, scoring seven runs in the bottom of the second to give the 'Lopes an early 7-0 lead. Two costly errors kept the inning alive, allowing GCU to open the flood gates.
The Jacks responded to make sure they wouldn't be shut out in the top of the third, scoring one run off a double from Hiatt, and added two more runs in the fourth. With two outs, Chavez singled to left field and was joined on base by
Kirsten Nouzovsky after she found the hole in the left side for a single of her own. Walker loaded up the bases after taking a pitch to her foot. Stalf drilled a single through the gap on the right to score two runners for HSU, cutting the 'Lopes lead to 7-3.
Two hits led to another Grand Canyon run in the bottom of the fourth, but the Jacks held the 'Lopes to just the one run as they headed back up to the plate.
As the rain began to fall, the 'Lopes struggled from the circle, hitting the first batter and walking the second. Allison McKibbon hit a little bloop just out of reach of the first baseman to load up the bases.
Felicia Viveiros walked to advance everyone up a base, scoring Randall from third. Nouzovsky and Walker also walked to bring the score to 8-6. Despite a pitcher change, the ball slipped out of the release and hit Hiatt to once again send in another run for the Jacks, before the 'Lopes were able to make the third putout.
With Humboldt State closing in on Grand Canyon, the Antelopes plated two runs off three hits to once again have a little bit of a cushion heading into the bottom of the sixth. The Jacks couldn't add to their scoreline and the home plate official ruled the game was over after HSU's at-bat, deciding the rain was too dangerous to play in.
HSU will play at least one game Sunday, with more games depending on the outcome of the game. With so many games being pushed back due to the weather, the bracket is still up in the air and will be decided late Saturday night.
