TURLOCK – In its last game of the Tournament of Champions, Humboldt State fell 5-4 to Dominican University, despite grabbing a 3-0 lead. The loss drops the Jacks to 12-29 on the season, finishing the tournament with a 2-4 record.
Four hits during a two-out rally in the top of the third plated three runs for the Jacks, giving Humboldt State a 3-0 lead. After the Penguins grabbed the first two outs,
Chrissy Stalf—who earned all-tournament honors—stepped up to the plate and doubled to right field to start the rally for the Jacks.
Courtney Hiatt followed suit with a double of her own, allowing Stalf to put the first run on the board for the Jacks.
Dani Randall also caught a bit of the double bug and sent her hit to deep right center, making her way to second and sending Hiatt in for the score.
Alicia Reid singled to right field, giving Randall the chance to put the Jacks up 3-0 before Dominican could grab the third putout.
The bottom of the fourth didn't go in favor of Humboldt State as the Penguins scored five runs off three hits and an error committed by the Jacks.
Unhappy with surrendering the lead, Humboldt State's first batter in the top of the fifth, Stalf, made perfect contact with the pitch, sending it well past the fence just right of center field.
Heading into their last chance at bat in the top of the seventh and still down a run, the Jacks went down in their first two batters to put pressure on creating another two-out rally. Hiatt singled to center field, hoping to spark the rally.
Erin Guidarelli pinch ran for Hiatt and made her way to third as Randall singled to right field. HSU couldn't get a base hit to send in Guidarelli for the tie, as the Penguins grabbed the last out to end the game.
Humboldt State will be at home after what seems like a lifetime on the road on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. The Jacks take on Notre Dame de Namur in a non-conference doubleheader before hosting San Francisco in a four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series.
