Season to conclude on the road for Jacks

ARCATA – With just six games left in its season, Humboldt State will finish how it started the season -- on the road.

"We have nothing to gain this week besides our pride," said head coach Frank Cheek. "With that, who will show up to play? I believe they all will."

The Jacks will make their third trip to Turlock, this time facing the home team Cal State Stanislaus for a four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series, with doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday. HSU will then conclude the season in Belmont as they take on Notre Dame de Namur in a non-conference doubleheader.

Humboldt State and Cal State Stanislaus boast similar records, with the Jacks standing at 14-35 overall and 6-26 in the CCAA, while the Warriors have 15-38 overall and 6-24 conference records. NDNU sits 18-25 overall, but will play six more games after Sunday's doubleheader.

Head-to-Head
The Jacks have beaten the Warriors 95 times (losing only 11 times), and split the series last year by winning the final two games. Humboldt State has dominated the overall series against Notre Dame de Namur, grabbing 23 victories, while only surrendering two losses. One of the wins came earlier this season as the Jacks took an 8-0 mercy rule win over the Argonauts while at the Tournament of Champions.

Live Stats
Friday's and Saturday's games will be streamed live via live stats through the CSUS website at http://ccaalivestats.com/stanislaus/sfb/. Notre Dame de Namur, unfortunately, does not feature a live stats option for softball.

Lumberjack Notes
Humboldt State looks to end its disappointing season on a high note, hopefully grabbing some much needed victories.

"It's very difficult to keep the morale up when everything is disintegrating," said Cheek.

Cheek and his team have come a long ways from the National Championship program just five years ago, showing an uncharacteristic losing record for the first time in 30 years. The Jacks show they can be a threat at the plate, racking up runs in a majority of their games, but can't quite seem to hold on to the victories.

"In order for us to win, we have to hit the ball and play error-less defense," said Cheek. "If we fail at one of those, we lose."

The Jacks come off a very painful four-game sweep in their last home stand, despite scoring first in all but one game. In the last game, Cal State East Bay dominated the first inning to deflate HSU, but didn't post another multi-run inning, which Cheek was thankful for.

Chrissy Stalf leads the Jacks at the plate with a .395 average, putting her in the top 10 in the CCAA leader board. Five other Lumberjacks are batting in the 300s: Kirsten Nouzovsky (.375), Dani Randall (.345), Courtney Hiatt (.341), Alicia Reid (.333) and Felicia Viveiros (.305).

As a team, HSU has knocked 59 home runs over the fence, needing five more to break the school's single-season record and to tie the conference's record. Reid leads the team with 13 long balls, followed by three Jacks with nine each: Nouzovsky, Randall and Hiatt.

Warrior Notes
Cal State Stanislaus has also had a struggling year, with the Warriors coming into the series on a seven-game losing streak. The Warriors aren't as strong as the Jacks hitting-wise, however, with only two players averaging in the 300s (with a minimum 2.5 total plate appearance/game). Jordan Flora's .320 average leads the team, along with her .490 slugging percentage. Flora has hit four home runs—almost accounting for half of CSU Stanislaus' nine homers—and has batted in 24 runs. Sarah Locarnini boasts a .306 average and is 12-for-17 on stolen base attempts, but also leads the conference in strikeouts with 45.

Argonaut Notes
Notre Dame de Namur has six games before it hosts Humboldt State, but currently is on a five-game losing streak. Janae Reyes leads the team in hitting, boasting a .366 batting average with 49 hits, including 17 doubles, while scoring 22 runs. Reyes has only been caught stealing once, while succeeding 11 times. Sammy McConvey leads the Argonauts from the circle with a 1.90 ERA in 144 innings pitched.

Cheek's Chit Chat
"We tried pitching changes this last weekend, but they didn't work. Thought to start Stalf in the last game, and she gave her best shot, but she hasn't been practicing pitching. ... I felt sad for the seniors. We could have won some of those. ... We have six games left that we are capable of winning, but we could also give them away. ... I thought the officials blew a call in the first game on Sunday that broke our backs. It was an obvious technical mistake. It deflates you. ... Our seniors didn't get to play much on their own field. That's why we need astroturf. We have a great home schedule next year, but will we even be able to play it? It's demoralizing to think about before the next season has even started. ... We're glad it's going to be over. It's a year we want to forget. It'll take a strong effort from the coaches and players to get back into the flow of things."
