TURLOCK – After registering seven hits in the first game, Humboldt State doubled its hits in the nightcap to settle for a split with Cal State Stanislaus. The Warriors took the first game 10-2 in five innings, but the Jacks rebounded and claimed the other half of the doubleheader with a 10-7 final score.
The results keep the two teams even in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, with HSU standing at 15-36 overall and 7-27 in conference, while CSUS stands at 16-41 overall and 7-27 in the CCAA.
Cal State Stanislaus started the day with a powerful inning, scoring seven runs in the first inning. The Warriors scored the seven runs off five hits and one error before
Courtney Hiatt connected with
Alicia Reid at third to catch a Warrior trying to steal.
Hiatt posted the first hit for Humboldt State with a single to right field to start the top of the second and was joined on base by
Felicia Viveiros after she took ball four. The Jacks couldn't capitalize on the runners, however, and the Warriors completed a double play to end the inning and prevent any scoring.
The Warriors tacked on another run in the bottom half of the second, but Humboldt State responded in the top of the third.
Andrea Chavez started the inning with a single to right field.
Tonya Walker reached on due to a fielder's choice, where CSUS' second baseman went for the tag but couldn't get the throw on target for the double play.
Kirsten Nouzovsky doubled to left center, allowing Walker to put the Jacks on the board.
Defensively, the Jacks held the Warriors in the bottom of the third, leaving three runners on base, but CSUS broke through in the fourth. The Warriors scored one run off one hit to put pressure on the Jacks to score in their next chance at the plate if they wanted the game to continue.
With two outs, Nouzovsky doubled to right field and made her way home to add another run for HSU after
Chrissy Stalf singled to left center. The Warriors found their third putout to cut any comeback the Jacks were brewing short.
CSU Stanislaus ended the game after five innings in the bottom of the fifth due to the mercy rule when Jordan Flora traded places with Brittani Weatherford at second, ending the game at 10-2.
Shaking off the loss, Humboldt State sprung back into action in the nightcap and posted its own high-scoring inning on offense in the second.
Viveiros walked to start the inning and was sent in for the score after
Dani Randall (4-for-4 in nightcap) doubled to left field.
Sarah Fox singled to join her on base and Chavez sent the Jacks' 60th home run over the fence at left field to put HSU up 4-0.
The Jacks added two runs in the third off three hits, initiated by Stalf's double to right center. Hiatt reached on base after the Warriors committed an error and Viveiros sent the two runners in by sending a double of her own to left field.
Heating up on offense, Humboldt State took a commanding lead in the fourth, scoring four more runs to take a 10-0 lead. Nouzovsky walked to start the inning and was accompanied on base by Reid after she singled through the left side. Stalf also walked to load the bases up with no outs. Hiatt sent two runners in with a single to center field.
Viveiros sacrificed a bunt to advance Stalf and Hiatt to third and second, respectively, putting them in better scoring positions. Randall sent Stalf home by finding the gap on the left side for an RBI single.
Serena Aragones took over the running at third for Hiatt and capitalized off the Warriors' catcher's mistake trying to catch Randall stealing.
Feeling good with a 10-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth, the Jacks let down on defense and surrendered five runs off two hits and an error to put the score at 10-5.
Although the Jacks could hold the Warriors in the fifth and sixth, CSUS found some urgency in the bottom of the seventh. The Warriors plated two runs off two hits, while leaving the tying runs on base. Reid made the final putout to keep the Lumberjack victory and end the game at 10-7.
The Jacks face the Warriors for two more games Saturday, looking to pick up some more wins before the season finishes up. Humboldt State will conclude its season on Sunday at Notre Dame de Namur.
