TURLOCK – Humboldt State jumped out ahead in both games against Cal State Stanislaus and held onto the victories, beating the Warriors 10-1 in the first game and 13-12 in the nightcap.
Kirsten Nouzovsky,
Chrissy Stalf,
Dani Randall and
Alicia Reid each hit home runs to put the season total to 64, for a new school record.
With the wins, the Jacks improve to 17-36 overall and 9-27 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, while the Warriors fall to 16-43 overall and 7-29 in conference.
The Jacks scored in their first chance at the plate, plating one run off two doubles. Nouzovsky started the inning with a double through the left side and was sent home off a double from
Courtney Hiatt.
HSU increased its lead to 6-0 in the top of the fourth, scoring five runs off four hits and an error. Stalf started the inning with a single to right center and was joined on base by
Felicia Viveiros after the Warriors' third baseman couldn't handle Viveiros bunt.
Sammi Gilbert loaded up the bases with a single of her own and advanced to second off
Sarah Fox's single through a left-side gap, while Stalf and Viveiros scored. Nouzovsky stepped up to the plate and drilled the ball down the left field line and rounded the bases to pick up the first home run of the day with three RBIs.
Hiatt took a pitch in the top of the fifth, scoring on a two-out rally as Randall doubled to right field to put the Jacks up 7-0 heading into the bottom half of the inning. Cal State Stanislaus prevented the shutout, scoring its lone run off one hit, but couldn't produce anything else on offense.
Andrea Chavez singled to left field to start the top of the sixth.
Tonya Walker and Nouzovsky loaded the bases up once more and Reid sent a two RBI single to center field. Nouzovsky was caught stealing, but Reid advanced to second on the play, scoring off a double from Hiatt. The Warriors couldn't score any more runs, ending the game at 10-1 after six innings.
In the nightcap, the Jacks took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first, scoring two of the runs off Stalf's home run over the center field fence. The Warriors responded with a four-run first inning of their own to take the lead.
With Walker on base after walking, Nouzovsky singled to right field, advancing Walker to third, and stole second with Reid at the plate. Reid laid a bunt down and a throwing error scored the two runners, but Reid was picked off at second.
Humboldt State held CSUS in the bottom of the second, heading to the top of the third. Randal blasted the Jacks' 63 home run of the season, tying the previous record in HSU's history set in 2009. However, the Warriors tied up the score in their half of the inning, scoring two runs off three hits.
Determined to take the lead back, Walker singled to left field and Reid, who transferred from CSUS, blasted her 14th homer of the season over the fence where her collegiate career started. Hiatt added another run to the Jacks' tally, scoring off a single from Randall to put the Jacks up 9-7.
Once again, however, the Warriors responded in their half of the inning, but could only plate one run to put the score at 8-6. The Jacks increased their lead in the fifth and sixth, scoring a run in each inning.
After CSUS scored a run in the sixth, Humboldt State took a 13-8 lead in the top of the seventh. Both Walker and Nouzovsky walked and found their way home, capitalizing off a throwing mistake of the Warriors.
The Jacks took down the first two outs in the last half of the inning, but couldn't find the third out quick enough. Cal State Stanislaus scored four runs off three hits and had bases loaded, but Humboldt State found the third out to end the inning with the 13-12 victory.
Humboldt State travels to Notre Dame de Namur for its last two games of the season, looking to build off the two wins. The non-conference doubleheader starts at 11 a.m. in Belmont.
