Women's basketball returns home and tries to narrow focus

Caitie Richards drives vs. UCSD.
ARCATA — The cry is not “one game at a time” for the Humboldt State women's basketball team, it's “one possession at a time.” And the focus on one possession at a time will be put to the test when HSU returns home to face San Francisco State on Thursday night and Sonoma State on Saturday. Both games are in Lumberjack Arena and will tip off at 5:30 p.m.

“It doesn't matter if it is the first possession or last possession,” HSU Head Coach Joddie Gleason said, “every possession is important. We need to have urgency every practice, every drill in practice, every game and every possession. To this point we have had too many mental lapses.”

The Lumberjacks (7-7 overall, 3-5 CCAA) have fallen to the middle of the pack in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, just behind San Francisco State (7-5, 4-4) and ahead of Sonoma State (4-8, 2-6).

“We have always had battles with San Francisco State,” Gleason said. “Many times it has come down to a one- or two-possession game. They are very strong defensively, using their defensive pressure and athleticism to force turnovers. And Sonoma State is very disciplined and is always well prepared. We need to increase our discipline.”

Head-to-Head
San Francisco State leads the all-time series 31-29. Last year Humboldt swept the two-game series, winning 66-61 at home and 51-34 in San Francisco. The Jacks have won the last four games against the Gators, and eight of the last nine.

Sonoma State leads the all-time series 36-31. Last year HSU swept the two-game series, winning 57-54 at home and 55-44 in Rohnert Park. The Jacks have won the last three games against the Seawolves, and seven of the last eight.

More Comments from Head Coach Joddie Gleason
"Game experience is where you learn how to play at this level and at this speed. It takes mental focus to get past what just happened in a game, otherwise you get exploited by the other team. We need our veterans to step up. We need three starters to score in double figures.  We also need to look a little harder to get a better shot.”
