Women's basketball approaches midway point on upswing

ARCATA —The Lumberjacks approach the midway point of the California Collegiate Athletic Association women's basketball season in seventh place, but are coming off a confidence-boosting win as they head on the road to play Cal State L.A. on Friday night and Cal St. Dominguez Hills on Saturday. Both games will tip off at 5:30 p.m.

“We had been playing tight, feeling the pressure,” said HSU Head Coach Joddie Gleason. “But that has now been released.”

In addition to riding the Lisa Petty wave (see notes below), Humboldt State (8-8 overall, 4-6 CCAA) made a subtle change in its starting line-up that bore immediate good fruit. Kelly Kime was moved from forward to guard, and the smaller, yet nimble, Dani Gaumer found herself in the starting line-up for the first time last weekend, playing forward.

“It minimizes the mistakes in our defensive rotation,” Gleason said. “It gives us more stability on defense, and it puts Kime in her natural position. Having her on the perimeter frees her for open shots from the perimeter. And Dani has been doing a good job.”

Kime - who is second on the team in rebounds, averaging 7.1 a game – found the new position still to her liking for rebounding. She grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds in the loss to San Francisco State.

“She has a nose for the ball,” Gleason said. “She sees it well coming off the rim and hunts it down.”

Petty Watch
No player in the 40-year history of HSU women's basketball has finished her career in the Top 10 in career total points, 3-pointers and rebounds. Lisa Petty is already in the Top 10 in two of those three categories. She is 17 rebounds shy of breaking into the Top 10 in that category. Her 31 points in the win over Sonoma State gives her 1,108 in her career, moving her past Trina Dukes into sixth place all-time.

Total Points in a Career
5. Sheryl Fairchild (86-90), 1,144
6. Lisa Petty (2009-active), 1,108
7. Trina Dukes (91-95), 1,081

3-Pointers in a Career
5. Keri Rocha (92-96), 137
6. Lisa Petty (09-active), 132
7. Kelly Fay (03-05), 119
8. Caitie Richards (09-active), 115

Rebounds in a Career
9. Katie Franci (08-09), 572
10. Sheryl Fairchild (86-90), 516
Lisa Petty: 499

“Lisa will do anything to help her team win,” Gleason said. “She is not focused on the numbers. But those are the kind of players who wind up breaking the records because they are competitive, self-motivated and want to succeed.”

More Comments from Head Coach Joddie Gleason
"Cal State L.A. is really balanced. They have many athletic weapons. They defend really well. They rotate really well. They force a lot of turnovers. … Cal St. Dominguez Hills has the ability to beat anybody. They are even more athletic than Cal State L.A. They really come after you on defense. We will have to withstand that pressure and attack it.”
