Women's basketball regroups for roadtrip

ARCATA — Redisovering its shooting touch will be the focus of the Humboldt State women's basketball team when it travels for a pair of California Collegiate Athletic Association games this weekend. After losing a pair of games at home last weekend, HSU hopes to regroup on the road as the Lumberjacks travel to face Cal State East Bay on Friday night and Cal St. Monterey Bay on Saturday. Both games will tip off at 5:30 p.m.

"We have to set up our shooters a little better,"  said HSU Coach Joddie Gleason. "They have been creating their own shots instead of getting a shot off a pass. We need to give people open looks. We also need to get our posts the ball in the paint instead of away from the basket."

One of the keys for the Lumberjacks will be senior Lisa Petty who last weekend became the 7th player in program history to score more than 1,000 career points. She has 1,022 points in her 94 games as a Lumberjack.

"Breaking into the 1,000 Club is a huge accomplishment," said Gleason. "Lisa is a great player. We rely on her. She draws a lot of attention and is still able to put up some high numbers. But we need more contributors to step up to relieve the pressure the opponents put on Lisa."

The team shot an arctic 29.5% from the floor last weekend in the two losses to Cal St. San Bernardino (42-41) and UC San Diego (71-54), dropping the team field goal percentage from 38.7% to 37.2% for the season.

Head-to-Head
Cal State East Bay leads the all-time series vs. HSU, 29-26. Last year the teams split their two games, with Humboldt winning at Hayward (66-44) but losing in Lumberjack Arena (57-52). The teams have a long history as opponents in several conferences. In addition to the CCAA, the Lumberjacks and Pioneers have squared off in the Northern California Athletic Conference, the Golden State Conference, the Northern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and the Northern California Women's intercollegiate Council. In the match-ups prior to the CCAA, Cal State East Bay was known as Cal State Hayward.

Humboldt State leads the all-time series vs. Cal St. Monterey Bay, 10-5, but the Otters have won three of the last four. Humboldt's last win at Monterey Bay was three years ago when the Lumberjacks won 65-57 on Jan. 2, 2010. Last year the teams split their two games, with Humboldt winning in Arcata (65-51) and losing in Seaside (67-60).

Cal St. East Bay Notes
Cal State East Bay enters Friday's game with a 3-6 overall record, 1-4 in the CCAA, after losing in dramatic fashion 54-53 to Cal St. Dominguez Hills on Saturday night. The Pioneers surrendered a nine-point lead in the game's last two minutes. "Too many missed free throws, missed defensive assignments and turnovers cost us the game," said Pioneer Head Coach Suzy Barcomb. ... East Bay has lost four games in a row. ... The Pioneers score fewer points than anyone in the CCAA (45.0) , but they also give up the fewest number of points per game (51.8) with a stingy defense that holds opponents to a combined field goal percentage of 32.9. ... The Pioneers are led by 5-9 sophomore Micah Walker (11.1 points per game), 5-8 junior Rachel Finnegan (5.7 rebounds per game) and 6-1 senior Lauren Lucchesi (5.2 rebounds per game).

Cal St. Monterey Bay Notes
Cal St. Monterey Bay (6-2 overall, 3-2 CCAA) had a three-game winning streak snapped at Cal State L.A. on Saturday when the Otters fell in triple overtime to the Eagles, 72-68. The Otters had tied the game in regulation with a 30-foot bomb by Stefanie Corgel at the buzzer, and tied the game again at the buzzer on a rebound and putback by Jessica Fontenette after a missed free throw to end the first overtime. But after going 12-for-15 from the line in regulation, the Otters were a miserable 5-for-14 from the line in the overtime periods.  ... Monterey Bay has a balanced attack with an inside game (Gabby Munsch, a 6-0 senior, leads the CCAA with a 52.5 field goal percentage) and outside game (Ashley Morgan, a 5-10 junior, and Nikki Beckman, a 5-8 sophomore, are among the CCAA leaders with three-point field goal percentages of 54.5 and 45.5, respectively). ... Stefanie Corgel, a 5-8 senior, leads the Otters with 9.4 points per game, and Brittani Jefferson, a 6-0 senior,  is the top rebounder with 7.0 rebounds per game.

Lumberjack Notes
Humboldt State (7-5 overall, 3-3 CCAA) dropped its two conference games last weekend. A win at Cal St. East Bay would keep the team from matching its last three-game losing streak in January of 2011 when the Lumberjacks lost to Cal St. San Bernardino, Cal Poly Pomona and Cal St. Monterey Bay, all in Lumberjack Arena. ... Lisa Petty is tied for third in the CCAA in scoring average (17.7 points per game) and is second in rebounding (8.8 rebounds per game). ... Elle Anderson is third in the CCAA in field goal percentage (50.8).

More Comments from Head Coach Joddie Gleason
"It's a tough road trip. Both Cal St. East Bay and Cal St. Monterey Bay are at the top of the conference in scoring defense and shooting percentage defense. And that will be a challenge for us since we are not diong well in scoring and shooting percentage right now. ... It will be about executing and getting our offense to look past the first option and to continue to move the ball. ... East Bay's match-up zone gives us trouble. And they are hungry They are a good team with the ability to do well. They will come out ready to fight. ... Monterey Bay has had great success in recent years, winning last year's conference tournament and the league title the year before that. They are very confident at home. They play a lot of people and are fresh when they are in. You can't focus on one or two players. They provide a lot of balance."
