Box Score BURNABY, B.C., Canada – Momentum was only a brief visitor again Saturday, quickly disappearing after Humboldt State had rallied to pull within a single touchdown in the Jacks' final road game of the 2013 season.
After spotting the Simon Fraser Clan a 24-0 lead, HSU scored 17 unanswered points to provide hopes of ending its season-long losing streak. But a 99-yard kickoff return by Tore Corrado right after the Jacks' final touchdown stuffed the Jacks' chances in an eventual 38-17 loss to SFU.
Humboldt State, now 0-10 overall and 0-9 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, has one more chance to end its skid. Following three straight roadtrips, the Jacks come home to finish the season with a 1 p.m. game Saturday against Western Oregon.
Simon Fraser ended its six-game slide, improving to 3-6 overall and in the GNAC.
After putting up its first points with an eight-yard touchdown run by Chris Tolbert in the first quarter, SFU found the endzone twice more, once on an 11-yard pass from Ryan Stanford to Lemar Durant and again on 22-yard pass from Stanford to Corrado. The Clan added a 26-yard field goal by Chad Heerspink to take a 24-0 lead by halftime.
"Everything seemed smooth with our pregame and our preparation," HSU head coach
Rob Smith said. "We came out and just didn't perform the first half. I've been searching for answers all season, but I've yet to find them."
Humboldt State finally broke the scoring drought when
Matt Bruder booted a 38-yard field goal early in the third quarter, and
Chase Krivashei grabbed a 13-yard touchdown pass from
Casey Mintz to pull the Jacks within 24-10 at the end of the period.
Krivashei was on the receiving end of another big play as the Jacks' comeback continued, this time hauling in a pass from Mintz and racing to the SFU 1-yard line before being tackled. Running back Kash Johnson powered it in from there, bringing the Jacks within seven at 24-17 with 6 minutes, 8 seconds remaining to be played.
The fatal blow, however, came on the ensuing kickoff. Corrado fielded the ball on his team's 1-yard line, then ran parallel to hand off on an apparent reverse. The entire Jacks' kickoff unit was duped by the play, leaving Corrado alone to race untouched to the endzone.
"I really felt we were in pretty good shape at that point, the way our defense was playing," Smith said. "To give that up is inexcusable."
For insurance, Simon Fraser added a touchdown on its next possession, completing an 8-play, 66-yard drive with 3-yard touchdown run by Tolbert.
Krivashei again was responsible for Humboldt State's highlights. The freshman sensation made 12 catches for 179 yards, moving him into second place on the Jacks' single-season receptions list with 86. He heads into next week's season finale only two shy of the record established in 2004 by Lumberjack Hall-of-Famer Dustin Creager
Johnson had his best outing of the season at running back, rushing 20 times for 60 yards and a touchdown. Mintz completed 21 of 45 passes for 340 yards, throwing one interception.
Tolbert led the Clan's running game, carrying the ball 35 times for 153 yards. Stanford was 14-23 passing for 220 yards without an interception.
