     ARCATA - The momentum was rolling for the 2013-14 Humboldt State women's basketball team

following two solid opening weekends of November action.  

     The Lumberjacks will try to recapture the momentum into the second month of the campaign as they prepare to open the home regular season and California Collegiate Athletic Association slates this week.

     HSU started the season by claiming three victories in four contests with one lone defeat coming to the hands of sixth-ranked Seattle Pacific in the season-opening tilt.

     The Jacks entertain the Tritons of UC San Diego on Thursday evening, before hosting the CSU San Bernardino Coyotes on Saturday night to begin league play.

HSU tries to shake off 18-day rust

     • In an usual occurence, HSU was able to take some time off during the Thanksgiving holiday.  The Jacks will take the court for the first time in 18 days since November 17.

     Coach Joddie Gleason on the lay-off: 

     "It was the first year we had a lay-off over Thanksgiving break since I have been here.  It's been a nice time to relax and look at what we have been doing and fine tune where we need to get better.  We are happy to fine tune our strategy both offensively and defensively."

Jacks run on Lumberjack Arena floor for home opener

     • After three weekends of playing including two exhibition affairs against NCAA Division I foes, HSU will run onto the Lumberjack Arena floor for its home regular season and California Collegiate opener on Thursday night.

     • During the past decade, HSU is 9-1 in home openers and 8-1 under coach Gleason's tuteledge.

     • HSU defeated Hope International, 64-55 and 69-57, the past two home openers with only a loss to Sonoma State, 73-65, during the 2010-11 season as the lone opening defeat since 2003-04.

     • HSU is 6-1 in CCAA home openers sincd joining the league with wins in the last two (48-45 over Cal Poly Pomona last year and 57-54 over Sonoma State the previous season) ... HSU defeated UCSD, 70-52, in the 2007-08 home opener

     • HSU is 4-3 in overall CCAA openers -- 3-1 at home of the seven games

HSU receiving votes in DII poll

     • In the latest poll as of Wednesday, Dec. 3, Humboldt State continued to make an appearance in the USA Today Coaches NCAA Division II poll.

     The Jacks are one of six of the California Collegiate Athletic Association teams listed in either the Top 25 or receiving votes with 16 votes.

     With not playing over the past two weeks, HSU lost five votes - 21 votes down to 16 votes - from the Nov. 26 rankings.

     Chico State (4-1) fell from number six to 11th after suffering a loss to Cal State Stanislaus remains the top CCAA rated club.

     HSU plays three of its four December games against other conference teams receiving votes.  Cal Poly Pomona (36 votes), which it plays on the road Dec. 14 and at home Dec. 21, and UC San Diego (29 votes), which it plays on Thursday night.

     Cal State Stanislaus and Cal State Monterey Bay round out the six CCAA members with 21 and 17 votes, respectively.

     Bentley College (Mass.) was the dominate top selection with 29 of the 31 first place votes with a 7-0 record.  Host of this year's NCAA DII Elite Eight Gannon University (Pa.) earned the other two top votes with a 6-0 record.  Emporia State (KS) and Nova Southeastern (Fla.) complete the top four.

Jacks early three-point and free throw efficiency

     • The 2013-14 women's basketball season is still very early but the improved HSU shooting efficiency is showing.  

     As a team, the Jacks hold the CCAA's top spot in free throw percentage of 82.9% (63 of 76).  HSU has connected on at least 78% of its free throw attempts in each of the first four games.

     •HSU also has produced the third best scoring average (75.2 ppg) and three-point field goal percentage (36.4%).  The Jacks have scored at least 66 points in each contest with a high of 87 against the Academy of Art.

     Behind Jae Shin's 18 triples, HSU had produced 32 three-pointers in 88 offerings for an average of eight per night.

HSU players among the CCAA leaders

     •Kersey Wilcox -- T1st in scoring (17.8 ppg), 1st Free Throw% (97.1% -- 33 of 34) & 2nd in assists (7.5 apg with 30)

     •Jae Shin -- 3rd in 3FG% (56.2% -- 18 of 32) & 4th in scoring (16.8 ppg)

     •Megan Shields -- 1st in blocks (2.5 bpg -- 10) & 8th in rebounding (8.5 rpg)

     •Elle Anderson & Kelly Kime -- 2nd (63.6%) and T7th (54.2%) FG percentage. 

vs. UC San Diego:

     • Tritons lead the series 11-8 after sweeping both contests last year

    • Won the 2012-13 games: 74-49 in Arcata on Jan. 5 & 78-66 in La Jolla on Feb. 8

    • In the last meeting, UCSD went out to a 43-30 first half lead to key the win

    • The last HSU win came in big fashion on Feb. 22, 2012 -- the Jacks upset the #1 Tritons, 74-73.

    • Coached by 2nd-year Heidi VanDerveer, who has a 21-6 record directing the Tritons and 104-32 mark in now her 6th-year as a head coach

    • UCSD was picked 4th in the CCAA Preseason Coaches Poll

    • Tritons received 43 votes in the November 26 NCAA DII USA Today Coaches Poll

    • UCSD heads into matchup winners of its last three games including sweeping two homes games last weekend over Metro State (Colo.), 62-61 overtime, and Azusa Pacific, 52-50.

    • All five of the Tritons games have been decided by six points or less -- UCSD has outscored its five foes by only 11 total points (319 to 308)

    • UCSD produced almost mirror results as HSU against the same two GNAC teams of Seattle Pacific and Western Washington -- the Tritons split the contests with loss to Seattle Pacific (66-63), which beat HSU by five points, and defeated Western Washington, 72-66 in overtime, which lost to HSU by nine points also in overtime

    • G Miranda Seto leads at 16.2 ppg (5th in CCAA) and 2nd in league with 3.2 steals/gm

    • Inside Erin Dautremont and Megan Perry average double figures with 12.2 & 11.8 ppg while both pulling down 6.2 rpg

    • F McKennan Bertsch also contributes 7.2 ppg and 6.6 rpg

    • Coach Gleason on UCSD: "They're battlers and know how to grind out games as they have won their last two games by one and two points last week.  They know how to win and historically been one of the best program's in the conference.  

    They have some different players this year, but their mentality is still the same.  They are smart, run action well and are prepared."

vs. CSU San Bernardino:

     • Coyotes have tied the series 8-8 which started in the 2006-07 season following a sweep of last year's pair of games.

    • Won the 2012-13 games: 42-41 in Arcata on Jan. 3 & 63-50 in San Bernardino on Feb. 9

    • In the last meeting, HSU took a 33-30 lead into half but its second half hoop was as cold as the polar ice cap.  CSUSB took advantage of HSU's 6-for-20 shooting (30%) second half shooting to outscore its visitor, 33-17, for the the win, 63-50.

    • The last HSU win came in the 2011-12 regular season finale in Arcata.  The Jacks claimed a 61-55 win for it 19th and final win of that year.    • Coached by 1st-year Renee Jimenez.  Her fifth-year as a head coach, who moved to the Coyotes after leading the Otters of Cal State Monterey Bay to a 97-46 record the past four years

    • CSUSB received one first place vote in the CCAA Preseason Coaches Poll, but 7th overall.

   • CSUSB comes off its first win of the year in a 60-52 victory over Metro State for the second day of the UC San Diego Thanksgiving Classic -- The Coyotes fell in the first night to Azusa Pacific, 65-50.

    • CSUSB dropped its first two games of the year by a combined six points - vs. Cal Baptist, 65-64, and hosting UCSD, 70-65.

    • The Coyotes are averaging a CCAA-low 56.0 points per game and have no scored more than 65 in any of their five games.

    • CSUSB also has hit the lowest percentage (32.0% or 96 of 300 attempts) of its field goal attempts and only 13 of 79 (16.5%) from three-point range.

    • Forwards Tayllor Gipson (14.8 ppg), Adriana Brodie (8.0 ppg & 6.6 rpg) and Jazzmyn Davis (7.0 ppg & 8.0 rpg) lead inside.

    • Guards Alexcia Mack adds 9.2 ppg

    • Coach Gleason on CSUSB: "They are really an athletic team and rely on guard play and athleticism to score.  They have Brodie and Davis inside with Mack and Gipson as guards.

    We will have to slow them down and keep track of them in the half court.

     Even though its her first year, coach Jimenez's teams always defend well and make you take care of the basketball."
