ARCATA – Last year Cal St. East Bay got out the brooms when they came to visit Humboldt State's softball team, sweeping the Jacks in four games (14-0, 11-8, 11-3, 9-8).
But some new faces in the Lumberjack lineup bodes well for a different outcome this time.
When the Jacks travel to Hayward for a pair of California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) double-headers this weekend, it could be a good gauge as to how the season will unfold. The first doubleheader is scheduled for Friday at noon, while Saturday's doubleheader will begin at 11 a.m.
HSU (4-5 overall) split with Cal Baptist last week in Riverside (5-10, 14-3), and lost four of five games in the Desert Stinger Tournament in Las Vegas, Nev., against some tough competition. Things did end on a positive note, however, as freshman pitcher Lizzy Perez pitched a complete game to defeat previously undefeated Notre Dame de Namur in the Jacks last game of the tournament, 7-3.
Hannah Williams tore up almost every pitcher she faced all week, knocking in 12 runs. She also had three homers.
The Pioneers (2-2 overall) split their season opening series against Dominican University. Cal State East Bay will be playing a non-conference doubleheader against Hawaii Hilo Tuesday at home.
Head-to-Head
The Lumberjacks lead the all-time series 71-32. But Cal St. East Bay has won seven of the last eight. In addition to last year's sweep, the Pioneers took three of four in 2011.
