Humboldt softball wins two in CCAA opener at CSU East Bay

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 HAYWARD – Two or 1,100. For those who know him, it's easy to guess which number was the most satisfying on Friday for Humboldt State Softball Head Coach Frank Cheek.

The “two” is the number of California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) victories registered over Cal St. East Bay on the first day of conference action for both teams. And 1,100? That's the milestone reached in the first game – the number of softball victories in Cheek's HSU career. It's now 1,101 – and counting.

“Two and oh,” Cheek said. “That's what I am more excited about. It's exciting because it's the present. The rest is just the past. But it's nice to have both of them.”

With the 6-2 and 9-2 victories, Humboldt is 2-0 in the CCAA and 6-5 overall. The Pioneers are 0-2 in the CCAA and 2-6 overall. It gives the Jacks a pair of wins over a team that defeated them four times in 2012, and had won seven of the last eight.

“It's two good wins for us,” Cheek said. “We got up early in both games, and both pitchers threw well. And people on the bench came through.”

The Jacks kept up their pace of two homers a game, hitting two in each game on Friday. Hannah Williams hit a two-run shot in the first inning of the first game, scoring Chrissy Stalf who led off the game with a double. Julie Pena added a solo homer in the second to put Humboldt ahead, 3-0.

Lizzie Perez pitched the complete-game victory for Humboldt, striking out seven and walking two. She scattered seven hits in the 6-2 win.

In the nightcap the Jacks scored one run in each of the first two innings. In the first Pena hit an RBI single, knocking in Serena Aragones. In the second Aragones hit a sacrifice fly to score Tonya Walker.

Humboldt broke open the game in the sixth when Stalf hit a 3-run homer. Then in the seventh pinch hitter Shelby Fowler hit a 2-run homer to put the Jacks up 9-0. East Bay scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh before Williams finished her complete game. Williams struck out five and walked one in the 9-2 win.

“We made a few rookie mistakes, like missing signs or not protecting the runner on a steal,” Cheek said. “Hopefully we learn from our mistakes.”

Humboldt and East Bay will play two more conference games on Saturday in Hayward. The first game begins at 11 a.m.
