Box Score ARCATA – It began to rain 3's for the Lumberjacks in the second half, but things dried up in overtime as Cal State East Bay held on for a 58-53 win in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action Saturday night.
Humboldt made seven 3-pointers in the second half to erase a seven-point halftime deficit (27-20).
Lisa Petty made four of them - two in the last 67 seconds of regulation, including one with two seconds left to force overtime.
“I probably would have hated myself if I had missed,” Petty said. “We were excited to go to overtime. We've got a good group with a lot of strength and a lot of heart. They never give up. This team has a lot of courage.”
The play that sent the game to OT had Petty's name on it from the start.
“It's designed for Lisa,” said HSU Head Coach
Joddie Gleason. “Lisa comes off a screen and cuts to the basket and receives a double screen at the 3-point line. Their players got turned around, and she got open in the corner.”
CSU East Bay's Sarah Finlay hit a 3-pointer to start the overtime, and the Pioneers never gave up the lead. Brianna Terrance led Cal State East Bay with 17 points.
Humboldt drops to 5-13 in the CCAA, 9-15 overall. It was the seventh win in a row for the Pioneers who climb to 11-7 in the CCAA and 13-9 overall.
Lisa Petty led the Jacks with 14 points, but it was a revitalized
Caitie Richards with 13 points who played a key role in the comeback. She hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 33 with 9:46 to go in regulation, then hit another one to tie the game at 40 with 4:30 to go.
“The coaches are definitely pushing for me to look to score a little more, so I'm trying to make that a focus,” Richards said. “You can always take something positive away from every game. East Bay has been on a six-game winning streak. They are the hottest team in the conference right now.”
“We're just good enough to lose close to these teams,” Gleason said. “We're scrapping and fighting, and they are working hard. We have great leadership with our seniors, and it rubs off on our other players. We can play with anyone in our conference. We've gone into overtime with other teams, and we've been one possession away from the top team in the conference.”
Dani Gaumer had a season-high nine points for the Jacks.
“Our bench did a good job of providing energy when they needed to and executing our game plan,” Gleason said. “Dani hit some big shots and made some big plays. In a zone you have to be able to play and make good reads, and Dani does a good job of that.”
It was a bad night for the home teams in the CCAA as all the visiting teams won. In other CCAA action, UCSD beat Chico State (67-65), San Francisco State defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills (58-49), Sonoma beat Cal State L.A. (61-41), San Bernardino defeated Stanislaus (61-52), and Cal State Monterey Bay beat Cal Poly Pomona (64-54).
The Jacks return to the road next week, playing Sonoma State on Friday and San Francisco State on Saturday. Both games tip off at 5:30 p.m.
