Amanda Kunst scored a career-high 12 vs. UC San Diego.
Box Score SAN DIEGO – Dig a hole, fall into it, and try to climb out.

It was not a recipe for success for the HSU women's basketball team, as it fell behind early to UC San Diego and could never catch up, losing 78-66 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action on Friday night.

The Jacks  (5-10 CCAA, 9-12) did not score their first basket until the 16:25 mark of the first half after falling behind 9-1. The Tritons (12-3 CCAA, 14-8) led by as many as 19 in the first half, led by the hot hand of Daisy Feder who scored 20 in the half on 7 of 10 shooting, including four 3-pointers.

“Daisy Feder beat us in that first half. She did everything for them,” said HSU Head Coach Joddie Gleason. “We didn't do a good enough job to make her take tough shots. She's a great player, and she's going to score, but there were too many times that we let her get easy ones.”

Humboldt trailed 43-30 at the half, then turned things around a bit in the second half, hitting 52% of its shots (13 of 25) to get within nine points with two minutes to go in the game. Lisa Petty led the Jacks with 20 points and eight rebounds. Kelly Kime scored 15, and Amanda Kunst scored a career-high 12.

“We were resilient and never gave up,” Gleason said. “We dug ourselves into a big hole a couple of times – once in each half. We kept fighting. It would have been easy to quit in those times. I like that resiliency. And we hit some of those perimeter shots that we've been struggling with.”

Humboldt hit eight 3-pointers in the game, including three each by Petty and Caitie Richards.  Kunst scored eight of her points in the second half.

“Amanda is a smart player. She executes our offense well. She is going to be a great player for us,” Gleason said.

The Tritons were led by Feder with 29 points, and Erin Dautremont with 20.

The road trip continues for the Jacks on Saturday with a game at Cal St. San Bernardino. The Coyotes (6-9 CCAA, 8-11) defeated Cal Poly Pomona on Friday, 65-57.

In other CCAA action on Friday, Chico beat San Francisco State (54-53), Monterey Bay defeated Cal State L.A. (64-52), Sonoma beat Cal St. Stanislaus (85-73), and East Bay defeated Dominguez Hills (63-43).
