ARCATA - The homestand continues this week for the Humboldt State softball team with six contests in four days.
The Jacks will step out of California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action on Wednesday as they host Dominican University (4-16 overall) at the HSU Softball Field beginning at 1 p.m. After a day off, Humboldt State will return to CCAA play Friday and Saturday as Cal State Stanislaus (6-10 CCAA, 11-13 overall) travels to Arcata for a pair of doubleheaders beginning at 1 p.m. and 11 a.m., respectively.
Humboldt's doubleheaders against Cal State Monterey Bay this past weekend were pushed back a day, making this Saturday's doubleheader their ninth and tenth games of the week.
Last Weekend – Humboldt State
Home runs were the story of the weekend as the Lumberjacks battled Cal State Monterey Bay in doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday. Lizzie Perez (6-4) was the winning pitcher for Humboldt's 9-1 victory in the first game on Saturday.
Chrissy Stalf hit her 36th home run of her career, one shy from being tied for second place on HSU's career home run list. The Jacks blew a 6-0 lead in game two, allowing Monterey Bay to score nine runs in the top of the sixth. HSU did not give up, and rallied in the seventh for four runs, culminating with an RBI single from
Hannah Brassmassery to tie it and a bases-loaded walk from
Andrea Chavez to win it (10-9).
Errors caused the Lumberjacks to lose game one on Sunday (3-4), but after a
Courtney Hiatt grand slam, and home runs from
Sarah Fox (her second of the day) and
Dani Randall, Humboldt State cruised to victory in game two (8-3).
Last Weekend – Dominican University
The Penguins faced Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Ariz., in Pacific West Conference action on Saturday, falling in both, (16-2, 3-0). Karly Harris took the loss in game one, allowing six runs on eight hits. Ashlyn Moriarity stepped in for relief, giving up 10 runs on 10 hits, ending the game after five innings. Moriarity took the loss in game two, falling to 1-7 on the season. The Penguins lost twice (10-0, 4-0) to Azusa Pacific University on Monday.
Last Weekend – Cal State Stanislaus
The Warriors hosted the Chico State Wildcats this past weekend in Turlock, splitting the series 2-2. On Friday, Chico took both from Stanislaus (6-5, 10-6). Randee Hindman took the loss for the Warriors in game one, and Natalie Rendon in game two. Lauren Liming recorded two doubles on the day.
Saturday was a different story, as the Warriors swept Chico (2-1, 10-5). Stanislaus took game one after a walk-off two-run home run by outfielder Cierrah Mullins. Senior pitcher Brittani Weatherford got the win for the Warriors, giving up just one unearned run on seven hits. A big six-run inning allowed the Warriors to cruise to victory in game two after two costly Wildcat errors. Mullins had a triple in the win. Hindman pitched five innings and was the winning pitcher.
Head-to-Head
Humboldt State and Dominican University have met five times, and the Jacks lead the series 4-1. The two teams met last year in Moraga for a doubleheader with Humboldt winning both games (5-2, 11-0). At the Tournament of Champions in Turlock last year the Penguins defeated the Jacks 5-4.
The Lumberjacks lead the all-time series against Cal State Stanislaus, 98-12. Last season, Humboldt State took three out of four games in Turlock (10-1, 13-12, 2-10, 10-7).
