No slowing down the long ball for Jacks as they sweep Warriors

Tonya Walker hit two home runs in the 11-3 win.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ARCATA – Can it be called a slump if a player has not hit a home run in four games? Maybe so, if you consider her teammates hit 17 long balls since her last one.

Hannah Williams chose the most opportune time to break out of her slump, slamming a three-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Humboldt State a 5-2 win and a sweep over Cal State Stanislaus in California Collegiate Athletic Association action on Saturday.

The Jacks (12-4 in CCAA, 18-9 overall) took the first game 11-3 in five innings after hitting six home runs.

Williams came up in the eighth with runners at the corners and one out. She was 0-for-7 against the Warriors, but had reached base six times. She was hit once and walked five times.

“I wasn't trying to hit a home run,” Williams said. “I was just trying to hit the ball deep in the outfield somewhere to let the runner tag up. But it just happened that it went over which is great. Everyone else hit one so I figured I might as well join the club.” It was her seventh home run for the season.

The “home run club” for Saturday included Chrissy Stalf (39th of her career and 10th on the season), Courtney Hiatt, Sarah Fox (2), and Tonya Walker (2).

Williams would not have had a chance at heroics if it were not for another big blast. Julie Pena who hit a one-out solo homer to tie the game (2-2) in the bottom of the seventh.

“When Pena hit one out, I knew we were going to win after that,” said HSU head coach Frank Cheek. “Home runs have been the key this whole week.”

Lizzie Perez (10-4) went the distance, giving up two unearned runs in the first but keeping the Warrior bats at bay the rest of the way. She gave up three hits. Natalie Rendon pitched well for the Warriors, but got the loss (4-8). Cal State Stanislaus drops to 6-14 in league and 11-17 overall.

In the first game, Katie Obbema (5-1) gave up a three-run homer in the first but then settled down to pitch a masterpiece for the final four innings, striking out 10. It was double her previous high for strikeouts – and both times she struck out five it was in seven innings.

“My rise ball was working today, and they weren't catching up to it - so I kept at it until I knew something would change,” Obbema said. “I just stuck with one pitch and everything else was good. I was a little nervous in the beginning. I was like 'uh-oh they're coming out strong.' But I took a step back and thought, 'You know what. We can hit.' So I wasn't really worried about it.”

And hit they did.

Two-run home run by Walker in the second. Solo homer by Stalf in the third. Two-run homer by Fox in the fourth. Then back-to-back-to-back home runs by Hiatt, Fox and Walker in the fifth. Stalf provided the mercy blow with a double to score the last run needed for the mercy rule.

Stalf was 7-for-7 on the day. She leads the team in batting average (.439), hits (36), home runs (10), slugging percentage (.866) and on-base percentage (.561).

Humboldt leads the nation with 49 home runs. They entered the four-game series with Stanislaus one ahead of University of North Georgia. In the last two days the Jacks have hit 14 home runs. North Georgia, which now has 35 home runs, hit one.
