Stalf slugs 42nd; Obbema shuts down Gators in sweep (1-0, 6-1)

Chrissy Stalf is now the all-time CCAA home run hitter.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SAN FRANCISCO – Another record bites the dust.

Senior Chrissy Stalf slugged her 42nd homer of her career in a 4-for-4 performance in the nightcap, leading Humboldt to a sweep over San Francisco State (1-0, 6-1) on Saturday. Stalf is now the all-time home run queen of the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

“It feels good to break the record,” Stalf said. “But the best part is that my family was here to see it. I'm seeing the ball, so I'm getting hits. I bunted to get on, and then I hit a home run. I was just seeing the ball well that game.”

Stalf has reached base in 13 consecutive games and in 32 of Humboldt's 33 games this season. She leads the team in batting (.451), slugging (.892) and on-base percentage (.568). Sophomore Dani Randall also homered for the Jacks who lead the nation with 60 home runs.

Humboldt (16-4 in CCAA, 24-9 overall) has won 13 straight games. San Francisco State drops to 7-13 in league and 13-16 overall. It is HSU's best winning streak since 2007 when the team won 19 in a row. The all-time best streak for the Jacks came in 2005 when the team won 35 straight.

Freshman Katie Obbema pitched a two-hit gem in the opener for her second straight shutout, then came on in relief to get Humboldt out of a third-inning, one-out, bases-loaded jam. Obbema (9-1) picked up the win, pitching 4.2 innings of shutout ball to improve her consecutive scoreless inning streak to 19.

“All I know is Obbema is pitching well,” said HSU head coach Frank Cheek. “We came back with Obbema and she did a great job. She came in after Perez was struggling. We went with a change, and it worked. We had bases loaded and we got out of the inning without giving up a run.”

The Jacks found themselves in unfamiliar territory in the first game, having to manufacture a run instead of waltzing home on a long ball. Andrea Chavez and Stalf were on third and first, respectively, with one out after both hit singles with a sacrifice bunt in between. Tonya Walker then hit a ball to Courtney Gravel at shortstop who threw to third to try to pick off Chavez. But Chavez dove back safely.

With the bases loaded Courtney Hiatt hit one sharply between third and short. Third baseman Lucy Fernandez dived to try to stop it, but it went deep into the hole where Gravel picked it up and tried to beat Stalf to the bag. Everyone was safe, and Chavez scored what turned out to be the only run of the game.

The homerless game for the Jacks broke a steak of 14 straight games with at least one home run. The last game HSU did not hit one out was March 2 in a 4-3 loss to Chico State.

Humboldt State returns home for a pair of doubleheaders against Cal State Dominguez Hills on Thursday and Friday. The games begin on both days at 1 p.m. The Toros (10-10 in league and 18-12 overall) lost three out of four in their series against Sonoma State.
