ARCATA - Not once but twice.
Senior first baseman
Chrissy Stalf was named as the Worth/California Collegiate Athletic Association Player of the Week for the second week in a row after breaking the CCAA career home run record (42). Teammate
Katie Obbema was named the Worth/CCAA Pitcher of the Week.
“It was only a matter of time,” said HSU head coach Frank Cheek of Stalf's home run heroics. “She has power to the opposite field, which makes her tough.”
Stalf led the Lumberjacks to a 6-0 week with series sweeps over non-conference opponent Notre Dame de Namur and San Francisco State. She hit 10-for-20 with six runs scored, one double, three home runs, and five RBI for a compiled .500 average and 1.000 slugging percentage.
With 25 total plate appearances she added five walks and only one strikeout for an on-base percentage of .600.
The Oakley native connected for one of the bigger home runs of her career so far, a two-run bomb in the Jacks 6-1 series finale over S.F. State to break the CCAA career mark.
Freshman pitcher
Katie Obbema was named Worth/CCAA Pitcher of the Week following a stellar week, recording four wins in Humboldt's wins over Notre Dame de Namur and San Francisco State. She has pitched 19 consecutive scoreless innings.
“She was ready to go,” Cheek said of her performance this weekend. “We'll start her against Dominguez Hills.”
The Morgan Hill native recorded four wins against Notre Dame de Namur and San Francisco State to guide the Lumberjacks to their 6-0 week. Obbema earned three complete game victories and a combined 4.2 inning victory in the 'Jacks 6-1 series finale against the Gators.
In 25.2 innings of work she allowed just 14 hits, three earned runs, five walks, while striking out 10 batters. The freshman took the circle for 18.2 innings of work in the 'Jacks conference series against San Francisco State, allowing just 11 hits and two walks, while striking out five Gator batters.
The Jacks prepare to face the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros (10-10 in league, 18-12 overall) who are ranked #21 by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) poll. The Jacks are in first place in the CCAA (16-4) and are 24-9 overall.
“Playing at home is an asset,” Cheek said. “They beat us pretty handily last year, but I don't think that will be the case this year. Our attitude is good, and we have good leadership. I believe the team is starting to believe in me.”
The two teams will battle in doubleheaders scheduled for Thursday and Friday, starting at 1 p.m. both days. Rain expected on Wednesday and Thursday may push the series back a day, to Friday and Saturday.
