Obbema Pitcher of the Week; big series vs. UCSD ahead

Obbema was named Worth/CCAA Pitcher of the Week for the second time.
ARCATA – Number one and two are clashing again. Only this time it also pairs a one-time national champion vs. a two-time national champion.

“San Diego was the defending national champion last year. They took second,” said HSU head coach Frank Cheek. “The last two years they have finished first and second in the nation. You're looking at 283 teams, and they have been first and second. You don't fall off that quickly once you have been up that high.”

Humboldt's two national softball titles were in 1999 and 2008.

The UCSD – HSU matchup gained importance after an eventful weekend in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Sonoma State loss three to the Lumberjacks (23-5 in the CCAA) and UC San Diego swept Cal State Stanislaus. UCSD (21-7 in the CCAA) is now two games up on Sonoma State, making the Tritons the number two team in the CCAA.

No. 7 Humboldt State (36-12 overall) will play host to the Tritons this weekend in doubleheaders Friday at 1 p.m. and Saturday at 11 a.m.

Not only did the Lumberjacks take three of four games from No. 17 Sonoma State this weekend, but Humboldt State pitcher Katie Obbema was named as the Worth/CCAA Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season. Over the weekend, the freshman recorded two complete-game wins over the Seawolves, struck out five batters and allowed just three earned runs on 15 hits.

Last Weekend – Humboldt State
The Lumberjacks showed why they deserved to be number one in the conference, taking three out of four games from Sonoma State (4-3, 6-2, 6-1, 3-17). The Jacks kept pounding out home runs as Hannah Williams and Chrissy Stalf each hit one and Dani Randall, two. Julie Pena added another two home runs, one of which was a grand slam. Obbema picked up two wins on the series and Lizzie Perez a win and a loss.

Last Weekend – UC San Diego
The Tritons traveled back to Turlock last weekend when they faced Cal State Stanislaus in CCAA action. UCSD walked away with a sweep over the Warriors (11-1, 11-3, 9-3, 6-3). Both games in Friday's doubleheader went only five innings due to the eight-run mercy rule.

Head-to-Head
The Lumberjacks lead the all-time series against the Tritons 22-15, but lost all four in the series last year when they traveled to San Diego (0-11, 2-5, 0-8, 1-9).
