Stalf gets to 50, Jacks sweep UC San Diego

Chrissy Stalf returns to the dugout after blasting her 50th career homer.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ARCATA – Fifty.

Senior Chrissy Stalf's three-run bomb in an 11-3 win over UC San Diego was her 50th, tying her for the career all-time mark in Humboldt State history. The Jacks also won the nightcap against the Tritons, 8-5.

“It feels great to tie, Tai,” Stalf said. Taiisha Pleasant (1997-2000) has held the HSU career record since 2000. “It's crazy to even get close to her. She's such a great ball player. If I break it on Saturday I may cry.”

Stalf's record-tying home run was huge – but teammates Dani Randall and Hannah Williams also had big days with the long ball. Sophomore Randall hit three homers in the first game, and Williams, also a sophomore, hit two in the second, including a grand slam for a 7-RBI game. Stalf has 21 home runs on the season, Randall has 10 and Williams has 13.

Humboldt (25-5 in the CCAA, 38-12 overall) is now four games up on the second-place Tritons (21-9 in league, 28-18 overall).

“It's crazy to know that if we're down four runs we can come back and win a game in almost the swing of a bat,” Stalf said.  “Coach knows that, and it's crazy to know.”

Humboldt leads the nation with 87 home runs. The previous school and conference record was 64.

“When we got the three-run homer in the first game, it took them out of their game plan,” said HSU head coach Frank Cheek. “San Diego's game plan is slap and run, bunt and run.  They play the best short game around. At the national tournament that's what they won with. They won with aggressive running and good bunting, and a pretty good defense. We were picked to finish sixth or seventh in league. Now we're on top of the world – best in the west. And if we keep hitting like that it will be tough to beat us.”

Freshman Katie Obbema (19-3) got the win in both games, pitching a complete game six-hitter in the first game and coming on in relief in the nightcap. For the Tritons Michelle Escamilla (3-9) was tagged with the loss in game one, and Jennifer Manuel (10-2) was the game two loser.

“I feel good,” Obbema said after pitching 11 innings on the day. “It's good to come in and have the run support and the defense that I have. And it's good to know that I just need to throw strikes and get the job done, and they'll do the rest. It makes my job easier.”

The Jacks and Tritons play another doubleheader on Saturday. The first game begins at 11 a.m. A split by the Jacks will clinch at least a tie for the CCAA Championship. A sweep will give the Jacks their first CCAA title since 2009.
