Stalf hits 51, 52 and 53; Jacks sweep CSU San Bernardino

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ARCATA – Fittingly, the record breaker was a walk-off.

Senior Chrissy Stalf launched the 51st home run of her career over the leftfield fence in the bottom of the fifth to end a one-sided contest against Cal State San Bernardino, 10-1 on Friday.

Things got worse for the Coyotes (12-22 in the California Collegiate Athletic Conference, 18-34 overall) in the nightcap as Stalf hit two more long balls, and the Jacks (29-5 in league and 42-12 overall) coasted to another five-inning shortened affair, 19-2.

“It's crazy that I even got 51. I've been waiting all week to play again,” Stalf said. “Last weekend I tied it, and I just really wanted to do it because my whole family was here. And right when I hit it my brother walked up, and he saw it. It makes it 100 times better that my family was here.”

Stalf was pressing a bit in the first game, but once the record-breaker was in the books, she was back to her sweet-swinging self in game two. Both of her homers were crushed in the lopsided affair where teammates Courtney Hiatt (12), Hannah Brassmassery (1) and Cyndi Chavez (1) also hit home runs. Chavez hit a grand slam, the fifth Humboldt player to hit one this year.

“Stalf works hard,” said HSU head coach Frank Cheek. “The last few weeks people have been pitching around her, not giving her anything to hit. So we stacked the deck. We put four sluggers up there. You go from the frying pan to the fire and back again. They had to pitch to her.”

Stalf has 24 home runs on the season to lead the nation, passing Texas Woman's Katie Hines who has 23. Humboldt's 94 home runs as a team also leads the nation. The NCAA record for home runs in a season is 112, hit by Metro State in 2010.

Humboldt has 13 hitters with at least one home run. Sophomore Dani Randall, the Louisville Slugger NFCA National Player of the Week, was 4-for-4 on the day to extend her hitting streak to 11 games.

Humboldt will play San Bernardino in another doubleheader on Saturday with the first game starting at 11 a.m. The Lumberjacks will honor the six seniors – Serena Aragones, Hannah Brassmassery, Erin Guidarelli, Courtney Hiatt, Claire Hoose, and Chrissy Stalf – before the game. There will also be a brief ceremony with former career home run record holder Taiisha Pleasant and Stalf.
