Box Score 3 TURLOCK –Despite seeing the ace of each of the three teams it played on Friday, Humboldt State's softball team won two of three at the Tournament of Champions in Turlock.
The Jacks opened the tourney with a 3-0 win over Azusa Pacific, saw its 18-game winning streak end against Saint Martin's (5-4), then defeated Central Washington in eight innings (2-1). The Jacks are 30-10 overall.
“Everyone is throwing their ace at us,” said HSU head coach Frank Cheek. “We hit the ball but we couldn't score. We left a lot of people on base.”
Sophomore
Hannah Williams (3-3) pitched a six-hit shutout against Azusa Pacific. She was pressed into service because freshman Lizzie Perez did not make the trip due to a concussion she suffered during practice last week.
“Williams was in and out of trouble. She did a good job, especially since we haven't used her much lately,” Cheek said. Humboldt put together all of its three hits against APU in the fifth inning, with senior
Courtney Hiatt getting a key 2-run single.
The Saint Martin's game went back and forth. Senior
Chrissy Stalf slugged her 17th home run and 46th of her career to lead off the game, but Saint Martin's answered with two runs in the bottom of the first against freshman
Katie Obbema.
With the score tied 3-3 in the fifth, Williams hit her ninth home run for a brief 4-3 Humboldt lead. Saint Martin's answered again in the bottom of the inning to tie it up.
“We had chances to win the game against Saint Martin's,” Cheek said. “But we had too many errors.”
The Jacks loaded the bases in the top of the seventh on an error and two walks but could not score. Saint Martin's opened the bottom of the inning with two singles. The next batter hit the ball to Stalf who fired a strike to third. But the ball was dropped and mishandled by freshman
Julie Pena, allowing the winning run to score.
In the final game of the day for the Jacks, Williams singled to knocked in Stalf in the third to put the Jacks up 1-0. Stalf led off the inning with a walk and was bunted over. In the fourth CWU's Alexa Olague tied it with a solo homer.
In the eighth, with the international tiebreaker rule in effect,
Dani Randall was placed at second where Pena knocked her in with a single. Obbema (12-2) retired the side in the bottom of the inning for the victory.
On Saturday the Jacks will play and Montana-Billings (11:15 a.m.)Western Washington (3:30 p.m.) as the tournament continues.
