Box Score 2 TURLOCK – Timely hitting and strong pitching gave Humboldt State two wins at the Tournament of Champions on Saturday. Freshman
Katie Obbema got the wins in both games, victories over Montana-Billings (5-4) and Western Washington (8-3).
“We have to give credit to Obbema,” said HSU head coach Frank Cheek. Obemma pitched a complete game in the opener, then pitched in relief to win the nightcap. “
Hannah Williams was doing well until about the third inning, and then they started to hit her hard. So we put Obbema back in and she did well.”
In the first game the Jacks jumped on Montana-Billings with first-inning home runs by senior
Chrissy Stalf and Williams to go up 3-0. Stalf's was her 18th of the season – tying the school and CCAA single-season record and the 47th in her career. For Williams, the two-run homer was her 10th on the season.
Billings tied the game at 4 in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run double by Taylor Hoke. The Jacks scored a run on an RBI single by junior
Tonya Walker in the top of the seventh for the winning margin.
In the second game the Jacks had two big innings and coasted to the win over Western Washington. In the four-run third sophomore
Dani Randall hit an RBI double and freshman
Julie Pena followed with an RBI single.
Pena had an even bigger hit in the fourth when she hit a two-out three-run homer to put the Jacks up 8-3. Humboldt pounded out 14 hits in the game.
Humboldt State will play in the championship bracket of the Gold section of the tournament on Sunday. The Jacks will play Sonoma State at 11 a.m. If they win they would advance to play Cal State Dominguez Hills. The winner of that game will play for the bracket championship at 3:15 p.m.
