Jacks start year with two one goal victories

After losing the 2012 season before it was started, Humboldt State soccer could not have had a better opening week of action.

HSU started the season with a 2-1 overtime win last Thursday at the Academy of Art before pulling out a 3-2 road win over Dominican on Monday.

1st 2-0 start since 2006

For the first time in seven years, the Lumberjacks claimed wins in each of their first two matches.

It is the eighth time in program history to begin at 2-0.  In the previous seven occurances, HSU secured winning seasons in six of those campaigns, while ending .500 in the other occasion.

The last 2-0 start happened to begin the 2006 season. The Jacks won the first three matches that season on the way to an 11-6-3 finish and the lone winning California Collegiate Athletic Association of 7-6-3.

Mariani nets two including game-winner

Seniors aim to make their final seasons count and Dan Mariani has produced two solid opening contests to accomplish that goal.

The veteran midfielder from Walnut Creek, Calif. netted the season opener game winning score 3:06 into the overtime period for the 2-1 win at Academy of Art.

Mariani followed the opening match score by finding the net to open the scoring at Dominican off a corner kick from teammate Sam Wahl.

The senior recorded only a pair of assists during the 2011 campaign.

Coach Jungemann comments:

     At Academy of Art:

"It is great to get a win in the first game and get a win under our belts.  It's been a long year and there was a lot of anticipation and nerves. I tried to get a handle on it (the players' nerves) but it is going to take some games to make that happen."

"It (the game-winner) was off a set piece where Connor served the cross.  The guys fought and worked hard with great spirit and never gave up with a good result in the end.  I am happy the guys were able to win and we have to go on from there."

     At Dominican:

"The guys played very well today and earned the victory through a solid team performance.  Dominican was organized and made the game difficult but the guys stuck to the game plan and were rewarded with a well deserved victory."
