Jacks use efficient shooting to complete first CCAA sweep

Dani Gaumer (3) scored a season-high 19 points with 3 triples
Box Score ARCATA – An efficient offense and top-notch free throw shooting enabled Humboldt State to post its first California Collegiate Athletic Association sweep of the season.

The Lumberjacks recorded its highest shooting percentage of the year both from the floor and the foul line to help lead the Gators of San Francisco State for the final 22 minutes of play in a high-scoring 93-85 contest.

For the first time in the four conference pair of games, the Jacks recorded a week's sweep. The two wins improves the North Coast program to an even 4-4 in the league and 7-5 on the year.

HSU netted 30 of 61 for the night, 15 of 30 in the second half, for 49.2-percent.  The home team also connected on 25 of 27 free throws on the night for a season-best 92.6-percent.

"It's great to get two wins. It was nice to get one win, but icing on the cake to get the sweep," pointed out HSU head coach Joddie Gleason. "San Francisco State kept hitting shot and we answered on our end. We can shoot free throws especially Kersey (Wilcox, who hit all 11 of her charity stripe shots) when she gets to the line. It is nice to have a high percentage."

The Jacks strong shooting was punctuated by the outside proficiency of long-range threats Jae Shin and Dani Gaumer. The guard pair knocked down all of HSU's 3-pointers, eight of 13 combined tries. Shin hit five of six of her attempts and finished with 17 points.

"Jae and Dani are coming in the gym early and staying late. They're always shooting so were trying to build that confidence that when they're not hitting shots they can," said Gleason of her shooters.

Gaumer went seven of 11 from the floor with three triples for a team-best 19-point night. She added seven boards and four assists.

"It feels really good to get the win. I feel like we needed this one, especially because San Francisco State has been beating good teams in the league. So this one is a good one to have," explained Gaumer. "I've been struggling pretty bad but my teammates have really been on me to keep shooting so it feels good to be able to put a few in."

Megan Shields was the force inside with 16 points on seven of 10 tries with seven rebounds and three blocked shots.

"I think our shots have been going in a lot more. We've been struggling the last couple games with our shooting. I think we're just feeling it right now," commented Shields. "Most of the time you have a better shooting night playing at home. Our shots were finally going in."

Along with her perfect 11 for 11 night at the foul line, Wilcox totaled 15 points to go with five rebounds, five assists and three steals on her birthday.

Off the bench, Jessica Johnson produced her career-best with nine points.  Kelly Kime chipped in seven caroms and two assists. Elle Anderson and Amanda Kunst added five and four points, respectively.

The 93-point night is the highest point total for HSU since defeating Simpson University on Dec. 29, 2012 by a 92-77 total.

The Gators (8-6/4-4 CCAA) came out of the gate fast. The visitors netted 10 of the affair's first 12 points in the opening 2:14 for a 10-2 lead.  HSU surged back over the next six minutes to edge in front, 18-17, at 11:33. San Francisco State enjoyed a six-point, 37-31, advantage at 4:30. HSU finished the opening stanza on a 14-4 run for a 45-41 lead.

Shin opened the second 20 minutes with a triple from the left corner and HSU was off and running. The HSU lead grew to as many as 14 points, 64-50, with 14:28 remaining.

The Gators held on and chipped away until pulling to within four points twice, 83-79 and then 87-83 with 39 seconds. The Jacks made all six free throws in the final half minute to seal the 93-85 win.

"We can carry confidence from these games. We were able to pull it together in the end and beat two good teams," Gaumer said.

Gleason agreed with Gaumer's final thought, "We'd love to have this propel us into the next few weeks. This conference is so tough top to bottom that any win is huge."

San Francisco State received 20 points from both Lauren Varney and Angela Van Sickel.  The Gators had a solid night from the floor itself making 32 of 65 tries (49.2-percent), but only made 10 of 23 from the foul line.

HSU will head on the road to Los Angeles for next week's pair of games starting at CSU Dominguez Hills on Friday, Jan. 17 at 5:30 p.m.
