ARCATA - For the first time since mid-November and the first time this season in California Collegiate Athletic Association action, Humboldt State was able to escape a weekend in women's basketball unscathed.
The Lumberjacks enjoyed the home confines of Lumberjack Arena to the tune of their home sweep last week.
It is back to the road for the 2013-14 HSU schedule as the Jacks alternate each week whether they are at home or on the road. The North Coast team will travel to Los Angeles for a Friday night contest at Cal State Dominguez Hills before taking on Cal State Los Angeles the following night.
Jacks strong finish and consistent shooting to victory
Kersey Wilcox's sweeping 10-foot jumper in the lane with 38 seconds left — and her ensuing steal and pair of free throws — helped the Jacks net the game's final six points in the 75-69 win over Sonoma State. For the second Friday in a row, Wilcox hit her season-best 25 points and finished with 40 points including 20 of 21 from the foul line for the weekend.
Two nights later HSU used its best shooting night of the year (30 of 61) to produce its highest point total of 93 points to overtake San Francisco State. Four players – Dani Gaumer, Jae Shin, Megan Shields and Wilcox – posted 15-plus points apiece to lead the way.

HSU looks to go over .500 on the road
Despite playing seven of the season's 12 games away from Lumberjack Arena, HSU sits with an even 2-2 true road game mark. In opening the season, the Jacks split two games before defeating Dominican to have a 2-1 neutral site mark.
Along with the non-conference win at Academy of Art, HSU is an even 2-2 (1-2 against CCAA foes) in road games.
In the swing down to Los Angeles this weekend, HSU looks to reverse its fortunes from a year ago versus CSU Dominguez Hills and Cal State Los Angeles. The Jacks maintain identical 4-3 records against the Toros and Golden Eagles over the past seven CCAA seasons. CSU Dominguez Hills snapped a four-game losing streak to HSU last year, while Cal State Los Angeles has won the past two meetings in southern California.
Coach Gleason on her team's focus:
"Looking at the past week, we are excited to get the two wins but don't want to get complacent. Our challenge is that we have to continue to bring intensity to practice each day and get better."
HSU jumps back into middle of CCAA ranks
What a difference a pair of wins can make. Last weekend's home games could have tipped in the loss column and made the rest of the year tougher for a CCAA playoff run, or as the case turned out, it put the Jacks right back into the middle of the league ranks. HSU is tied with both Chico State and San Franciso State at 4-4 in the CCAA with 24th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona three games better in first at 7-1. The Jacks will have both opponents – CSU Dominguez Hills and Cal State Los Angeles – go into the week a game ahead of them with 5-3 records.
'Sixth starter' Gaumer providing punch
• Averaging over 25 minutes per night, junior guard Dani Gaumer has been able to provide scoring punch as the "Sixth Starter." The third-year player averaged 14.0 ppg, 7.0 rpg and 3.0 apg last weekend.
• After a seven-point and seven-rebound Thursday night effort, Gaumer posted her career-bests of 19 points and four assists against San Francisco State.
HSU bench giving quality support
• HSU received quality support from its bench last week in the two wins. Jain Tuey had a career-high seven points with Sumayyah Wiggins adding six points and six rebound, including a pair of late offensive caroms versus Sonoma State.
• Jessica Johnson sliced her way to her highest output of her two-year career with nine points, while Amanda Kunst chipped in four against San Francisco State.
"We have been getting sparks off the bench in Johnson, Tuey, Wiggins and Kunst. They all came in and contributed and really provided sparks," noted Gleason. Â Â Â

• Won seven of its last eight
• Swept last year's season series vs. HSU for the first time ... the 82-66 win in Carson last Jan. 26 was the first home win in the last five years to snap a HSU four-game win streak. Trailing by five at half, HSU cut the margin to two, 40-38, in the first two minutes only to see CSUDH score the next 20 points...HSU's Kelly Kime had 13 points and CSUDH's Monay Lee finished with 28.
• Overall, the Jacks are 4-3 on the Toros home floor in the past seven years.
• Won all three home contests by an average of 13 points per game
• Coached by 2nd-year head coach Molly Goodenbour ... the Stanford alum is 18-20 leading the Toros after leading UC Irvine to a 44-76 mark in four years and Chico State two years prior to a 52-11 record
• Last HSU win in Carson was a 65-60 final two seasons ago
• The Toros are lead by three double digit scorers:
-PG Monay Lee is 4th in CCAA at 16.6 ppg & 4th in rebounding (8.2 rpg)...

-G Talia Rayford adds 13.3 ppg and 8.0 rpg...she is 1st in offensive rebounding at 4.6 rpg and 6th overall.
• F Amber Wharton is 3rd in CCAA free throw percentage (88.0%)
HSU coach Gleason on the Toros:
"Dominguez Hills is loaded with talent. Their top scorers are physical, strong and diverse in their ways of scoring offensively. Monay Lee is a top player with a solid supporting staff around her that is pretty diverse in their talents."
Scouting Cal State Los Angeles:
• CSULA enters the week having split each of its last six games going 3-3 over that time.
• The Golden Eagles won at Cal State Stanislaus (68-57), before falling at Chico State (68-58)
• Playing the eighth and ninth home games already this season at the Eagles Nest ... CSULA has went 5-2 in the first seven and 1-1 against CCAA foes.
• Coached by fourth-year Janell Jones ... she is 54-46 over her first three-plus years and led the Golden Eagles to a program-tying 21 wins last season.
• Reached the last two CCAA championship games.
• Since 2006-07, Golden Eagles are 5-9 vs. the Jacks but have won the last threeÂ
• Last year in Los Angeles, the game went to overtime. HSU edged ahead, 70-69, with 50 seconds only to see CSULA score 13 ticks later to make it 71-70. HSU missed it next two shots and a potential game-winning 3-pointer in the final seconds in a 72-70 final ... HSU's Kelly Kime had 12 points and 13 rebounds with L.A.'s Paige Melville hit 15 points.
• Golden Eagles are 3-4 at home vs. Jacks
• G/F Katie Batlin stands in the CCAA top 10 in seven offensive categories: 1st in Field goals/game (6.7/gm), 1st in steals (3.2 spg), 2nd in defensive rebounding (7.3 rpg), 3rd in assists (4.2 apg), 4th in scoring (16.5 ppg) and rebounding (8.4 rpg) and 6th in field goal percentage (.485)
• PG Paige Melville is in the CCAA's top 10 in seven offensive categories including 6th in scoring (15.3 ppg) and 4th in 3-pointers per game (2.0/gm.)
• C Destinee La Fountain averages a double-double of 10.0 ppg and 10.5 rpg (1st in rebounding) ... she is also 2nd in blocks (1.8 bpg)
• G Aiwekhoe Okungbowa completes LA's top point producers at 9.1 ppg.
  • Coach Gleason on CSULA:
"(Paige) Melville can really shoot as she is one of the best in the CCAA and gets to the basket. It will be two point guards going head-to-head in a showdown with Kersey (Wilcox). Los Angeles does have a lot of new players who are productive for them. Both teams (we face this week) are very physical, defend hard and rebound and will have to handle their pressure and physicality."
