Box Score CARSON – Humboldt State was unable to accomplish much of anything on Friday night against Cal State Dominguez Hills in women's basketball action. The home Toros raced to a 19-4 in the opening seven minutes and hit key long-range shots to not allow the Lumberjacks closer than eight points the rest of the night in a 79-61 California Collegiate Athletic Association win.
"They dominated us. Dominguez Hills came out ready to play, and we were tentative on offense," said HSU head coach
Joddie Gleason. "We played with no urgency to defend and were late on every rotation. We didn't rebound, and they had 20 offensive rebounds. You can't win in this conference with those type of numbers."
Senior
Jain Tuey was the lone HSU player to post double figures with 13 points with three triples in 23 minutes off the bench. Tuey was part of a Jacks' bench which scored 34 of the team's 61 points on the night.
Amanda Kunst recorded her best night of the year with nine points.
"Kunst and Tuey gave us some energy and attacked hard, but it wasn't enough as we need more from the rest of the team," added Gleason.
The Toros held the CCAA's leading scorer Wilcox to eight points and three assists. Gaumer chipped in nine tallies and a pair of assists.
After two home games with less than 10 turnovers, HSU committed 21 turnovers to add to its difficult night along with losing the battle on the boards, 38-29.
Trailing 40-24 at half, the Jacks (7-6/4-5 CCAA) came out charging.
Megan Shields hit a jumper and saw
Kersey Wilcox and Dani Gaumer drain back-to-back triples for a 40-32 score at 18:24 left.
CSU Dominguez Hills (10-3/6-3 CCAA), though, used the 3-point shot to regain its footing and squelch the visiting momentum. Simone Thompson, Breanne Garcia and Talia Rayford all downed 3-pointers over a 1:05 period of time for a then 17-point lead, 49-32.
"We cut it to eight and then gave up three-straight 3-pointers. It looked like we hoped they were going to miss," said Gleason.
HSU pulled to within a dozen, 64-52, on two Kunst free throws with 6:46 showing on the clock. As was the case all night, CSU Dominguez Hills answered with a layup and a three-pointer on its next two possessions to seal the game's result.
The Toros put five players in double digits with Tayler Champion and Monay Lee leading with 16 and 15 points and six rebounds apiece.
"We have to have a short memory to take on a good Cal State Los Angeles team tomorrow," said Gleason.
The Jacks will battle the Golden Eagles of Cal State Los Angeles in a 5:30 p.m. game Saturday night.
