HSU scoring drought enables Cal St. L.A. to shoot for win

Amanda Kunst (21) netted a career-high 16 points
Box Score LOS ANGELES – Ending up on the wrong end of an extended scoring drought usually does not fare well and it did not for Humboldt State.

Leading by 11 points, HSU saw the net sewn shut over a nine-minute period. Host Cal State Los Angeles would record 27 straight points and ride the huge run for the win, 77-63, on Saturday night.

"It was a lack of offensive efficiency for us. We didn't make shots, didn't make plays and didn't have anyone step up and stop the bleeding," said Lumberjacks head coach Joddie Gleason.

Over the lengthy drought, HSU missed all nine shots from the field, both free throws and committed five turnovers. Before the tough time, the Jacks had made nine of 20 attempts from the floor for their lead.

CSULA scored the last 17 points of the first half to lead 30-24, then continued the scoring streak to start the second half with the Golden Eagles' top player, Paige Melville, draining back-to-back 3-pointers. Buckets from Destinee La Fountain and Alisha Belt bloated the margin to 40-24.

"We left their best player (Melville) wide open on the first two second half possessions for 3-pointers," said Gleason. "We did a much better job tonight preparing to compete than last night. We still had lapses, but we prepared to compete and prepared to win tonight."

The Jacks (7-7/4-6 California Collegiate Athletic Association) did have a shining star of the night who tried to single-handedly pull her team back into the contest. After no points and three rebounds in the first half, sophomore Amanda Kunst recorded her career-best game in one half of action. She hit six of eight tries and four of five from the charity stripe for all 16 of her points, while adding five defensive rebounds for eight.

"Amanda Kunst played a great game. She was active, rebounded, moved without the ball and did a good job," said Gleason. "Especially with Kelly Kime out, Dani (Gaumer) and Amanda played more and will play a lot in the future."

Kersey Wilcox and Megan Shields were the other double-digit HSU scorers with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Wilcox handed out three assists and Shields pulled down eight boards and blocked four shots. Gaumer and Jae Shin chipped in eight and seven points.

Cal State Los Angeles (9-5/6-4 CCAA) received a game-high 21 points from Melville including four triples.  Center La Fountain had the lone double-double of 11 points and 20 rebounds.

The evening started out well for the Jacks and stayed that way for the first 14 minutes of action. A Wilcox 3-pointer gave HSU an 8-2 early advantage and a Shin triple made it 21-13 lead at 7:09 in the first half. Elle Anderson knocked down a short inside jump shot for an 11-point HSU margin, 24-13, at 6:02 – HSU's final point of the half.

As the HSU drought hit nine minutes, Shields banked home a layup to make it 40-26 at 17:03 left.

HSU cut the deficit down to nine points twice until a Shields' offensive rebound and putback made it a seven-point game, 53-46, at 8:38. Melville, though, hit her fourth 3-pointer, and the Golden Eagles would not let the game become any closer.

HSU will look to bounce back next week with a pair of home games starting Thursday night against Cal State Stanislaus with a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
