Jacks’ motor runs all game to race past Warriors

Megan Shields posted 26 points, 13 rebounds and 3 blocks
Box Score ARCATA – The Lumberjacks' motor revved early and never stopped in a surprising pasting of the upstart Warriors to a tune of a 34-point victory.

Humboldt State's Megan Shields produced her best game inside, while teammate Kersey Wilcox quarterbacked the offense to take down Cal State Stanislaus, 97-63.

"We haven't had 40 minutes of focus this season and this was great tonight. Our second double-digit win as every game has been tight," said HSU head coach Joddie Gleason.

Gleason's troops recorded their highest point total of the season of 97 points, the second 90-plus point contest coming on back-to-back games in Lumberjack Arena with 93 points against San Francisco State on Jan. 11.

The HSU (8-7/5-6 CCAA) victory was also the eighth-straight in Arcata in the series versus Cal State Stanislaus (10-5/7-4 CCAA) dating back to the Jacks entering the California Collegiate Athletic Association in the 2006-07 season.

The Jacks recorded their best shooting night of the year at 55.4-percent (31 of 56) and won the battle on the glass, 44-33.

The HSU junior transfer duo of Shields and Wilcox combined for 47 points, 15 rebounds and 11 assists on the night.

Shields posted her season-best 26 points on 10 of 13 shooting including a 3-pointer. She finished with her third double-double of the season with 13 rebounds including six on the offensive end. The center swatted three shots and assisted on two other baskets to finish her night in 21 minutes of action.

"It was great to be honest to get the win the way we did. The win was really nice for all of us and was a lot of fun," added Shields. "We played back up to our full potential tonight."

The court general Wilcox tied her season-high with nine assists to only three turnovers. The point guard made four of seven shots with one triple and 12 of 12 from the foul line for 21 points, her seventh 20-plus point night. She also pulled down two rebounds and stole two balls.

"Kersey did a great job handling their press. She, sometimes, broke it singlehandedly," noted Gleason.

Jae Shin downed three 3-pointers and finished with 13 points, while Dani Gaumer chipped in 10 points as the other two Jacks' double figure scorers.

"Our offense came out strong ready to play.  Our stops on defense led to offense," said Shin.

Sumayyah Wiggins recorded eight points and Elle Anderson grabbed seven boards off a bench, which saw every HSU player log action.

"It was nice to get all of our players in the game.  So many of them work hard and give their all in practice each day," said the Jacks' coach.

After two Shin free throws 1:14 into the contest, HSU was off and running.  The home club netted 14 of the game's opening 15 points to lead 14-1 only nine minutes into the game.

An Anderson layup gave HSU the first 20-point lead, 38-17, before a 43-21 halftime tally.

HSU did not let up in the second 20 minutes.  A Jain Tuey steal and Wilcox layup on the other end made it 53-27 in the first four minutes.  The home team would coast home the rest of the way.

The Warriors' Lauren Godde led her team with 11 points.

HSU will go for its second home week sweep against Chico State Saturday night starting at 5:30 p.m.
