Jacks start CCAA second half in big road swing

Jain Tuey (00)
ARCATA - The stretch drive of the 2013-14 basketball season has arrived. Humboldt State starts the California Collegiate Athletic Association second half with a big road swing to the southern part of the state.

With great North Coast fan support last weekend, the Lumberjacks were unable to send their supporters home with a complete sweep of league foes. HSU saw a double-digit advantage slowly erode away and turned into a three-point loss to Chico State.

HSU will try to recapture the winning combination in southern California. It will for a big swing in two tough places to play with a tilt at Cal State San Bernardino on Friday night, before making the dip down to UC San Diego for a Saturday night contest.

HSU determined for more than split

For the start of the season's stretch drive, HSU will tackle one of its two longest road trips.

The Jacks will go into the weekend determined to kick off the second half with more than a split of their games. HSU seeks to reverse its last two weeks with only one 'W' placed in the win column of the four contests.

A split was the result of the first meetings of the Jacks' games versus the Coyotes and Tritons.

HSU put five players in double figures for a 73-61 win over CSU San Bernardino. Kersey Wilcox led the way with 18 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals with Megan Shields right behind with 17 tallies, eight boards and three blocks. Alexia Mack was the Coyotes offense with 23 points on 10 of 21 shooting. Jazzmyn Davis added a double-double of 15 points and 13 rebounds.

In the early game of the early December weekend, UC San Diego won each half by four points for its 71-63 win. Erin Dautremont, who grabbed 13 rebounds, Megan Perry and Stephanie Yano each totaled 12 points. Wilcox scored 24 points to go with five rebounds and four assists in the home effort. Shields chipped in 11 rebounds and 10 points and Kelly Kime had 16 points.

HSU standing against opponents

HSU aims to even one road series and snap a rough skid in another one this week.

The Jacks are 4-5 in San Bernardino and dropped last season's meeting and three of the last four. HSU fell in the last two games in La Jolla and four of the past five trips to the UCSD campus.

Coach Gleason on her team's weekly direction:

"Rebounding. We gave up 22 second chance points against Chico State and we only scored nine second chance points ourselves. The state really stuck out when we looked at the game."

Shields posts best outing in a Jacks uniform

In the highest scoring output of the season by the team, center Megan Shields enjoyed her best outing in a Jacks uniform.

The junior made 10 of the 13 shots she took including a desperation 3-pointer right before the shot clock sounded from the top-of-the-key for 26 total points. She pulled down six offensive and seven defensive for 13 rebounds for the double-double.  Shields also blocked three shots and assisted on two buckets.

Wilcox makes two dozen free throws

A week after missing unusual four free throws in two games in Los Angeles, Wilcox was back to her more automatic self last weekend.

The point guard toed the line 12 times in two contests and connected on all 24 free throws she attempted. It was the fourth time this season she made 11-plus free throws in a game and third time she was 12 for 12.

With the return of her charity stripe touch, the junior regained her position at the top of the CCAA's foul shot shooters. She has now made 110 of 120 tries for a 91.7-percent clip in 16 games.

Shin and Wilcox move into HSU top 10 single season lists

Newcomers Jae Shin and Kersey Wilcox have moved into the Jacks' season top 10 record lists.

Shin has knocked down 51 3-point attempts for 10th on the HSU single season 3-pointer list. Wilcox's 110 made free throws is the seventh most in a Jacks season.
