Jacks Corral Toros in Straight Sets

Boxscore
CARSON, Calif. — After a long five-set victory last night, the Humboldt State volleyball team corralled  Cal State Dominguez Hills in straight sets 3-0 to complete a perfect road trip Saturday night.

The Lumberjacks improved to 11-4 on the year and remained tied for second in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (8-3) after taking the Toros (2-13/1-10 CCAA) by scores of 25-16, 25-19 and 25-17.

The HSU win also gives the program its first Los Angeles road trip sweep. The Jacks upset the Eagles of Cal State Los Angeles in five sets, after trailing 2-1 Friday evening.

"The girls did a nice job of getting it done tonight, after our five-set battle last night. They are an exhausted group of girls, and it was important for us to get a three-set win tonight," said Kelly Wood, HSU Head Coach. "This road trip showed a ton of growth for our team. It's always a challenge to win on the road."

Symone Hayden finished as the Jacks' offensive leader. The sophomore downed 10 kills, hit .350 and recorded two block assists.

Nicole Bewley had her way hitting as she lined nine kills with one error in 13 attacks for a .615 hit percentage along with a pair of block assists. Ashley Owen added six kills and three block assists. Alex Hasenstab assisted on five blocks.

Kaitlyn Dunaway was the top dig producer with 13 to go with six kills and a block. Erin Mitchell handed out 17 assists and Kelci Renshaw dug 11 home attacks. Kat Rifilato chipped in nine assists and Haley Biles had nine digs.

Trailing 12-11 in the first set, HSU netted the next seven points, with Mitchell serving on six of them, to open an 18-12 advantage. The visitors finished the set on a 14-4 spurt for the 25-16 win.

Tied at three, Bewley killed the next point and the Jacks never trailed again in the set. A Hasenstab kill and Cal State Dominguez Hills attack error completed the set, 25-19.

Following the intermission, the two teams were tied at 8-8 in the third set. Started by a Hasenstab kill, HSU put the next five points on the scoreboard and it led to a 25-17 win and sweep of the home team.

HSU returns to Lumberjack Arena for a pair of home matches next week starting with Cal State East Bay on Thursday night at 7 p.m.
