ARCATA, Calif. — Trailing by six points, Humboldt State rattled off eight-straight points behind
Kaitlyn Dunaway and
Nicole Bewley to seal the volleyball win, 3-1, over San Francisco State Thursday.
Down 18-12 in the fourth set, Bewley killed the next point, before Dunaway served seven consecutive points to help the Jacks take the lead, 20-18. Bewley added two of HSU's final seven points for the 25-21 fourth set win and completed the match victory over San Francisco State (25-21, 22-25, 25-19, 25-21).
"Dunaway went back to the service line and served seven-straight points. When her serve is on, it is tough to pass," said Jacks' Head Coach
Kelly Wood. "Our girls fed off the energy in the gym tonight. It was a huge comeback and great to see the girls come back from a deficit so large."
The Jacks' comeback win guaranteed their first non-losing season in nine years. HSU improved to 13-5 overall and can finish no worse than .500 with eight regular season matches remaining. The Jacks' 13
th victory signified the most victories since the 2005 team went 13-13, the last non-losing season.
In the California Collegiate Athletic Association, HSU moved into a second place tie with Cal State San Bernardino at 10-4. Sonoma State swept, Cal State San Bernardino, 3-0, Thursday night.
On the night, Bewley hit a match-high .520 with 13 kills on 25 attacks without an error. The junior also contributed eight digs, three blocks assists and two aces.
"Nicole had a great night," said Wood. "In the last couple weeks, we have worked on using our middles more in the offense and it is paying off."
Dunaway posted 12 kills, 15 digs, two aces and one block assist.
Ashley Owen chipped in 14 kills and seven digs.
Symone Hayden rounded out the double figure HSU frontline with 11 kills and three total blocks.
Kat Rifilato finished with 31 assists, five kills, nine digs and three block assists.
Erin Mitchell added 28 assists.
Haley Biles and
Kelci Renshaw led the defense with 31 and 15 digs, respectively.
Tied at 20-20 in the first set, HSU put the next four points on the scoreboard. Leading 24-21, Bewley killed Rifilato's next set to cap the 25-21 victory.
The Gators (9-10/7-7 CCAA) rode three late points in a row and never gave up the advantage for a 25-22 set two victory.
Behind 9-8 in the third set, Owen downed the next point, before Renshaw served the following five points opened a 13-9 lead. HSU never trailed again to open a 2-1 lead by taking the set, 25-19.
HSU will host CCAA-leading Sonoma State (14-4/12-2 CCAA) Saturday night. First serve is 7 p.m.
