SEASIDE, Calif. – Cal State Monterey Bay found the net twice in the final 30 minutes of play and ended Humboldt State men's soccer conference playoff hopes, 4-2, in Thursday's regular season finale.
Trailing 2-1, the Lumberjacks'
Braxton Griffin scored to tie the game at 50:13. The Otters regained the lead 11 minutes later on a Michael Brixey goal and sealed the victory on a Roque Magana score at 80:03.
HSU finished its season at 8-7-2 overall, a two-win improvement over last season, and 4-6-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. The Jacks' winning season was their first since an 11-6-3 final mark in 2006.
The Jacks loss ended its CCAA playoff hopes as they fell one point shy of the sixth and final spot with 13 points.
After a 24
th minute Cal State Monterey Bay goal started the match's scoring, HSU's
Chuck Pitts took a Griffin shot rebound and deflected it into the goal to tie, 1-1, at 35:40.
The Otters' Brixey scored his first goal less than five minutes into the second half (49:26). Griffin took
Connor Wilkinson's crossing pass to tie the match, 2-2, 47 seconds later.
In his final match, HSU goalie
Javier Torres saved three shots in goal.
