Wildcats Edge Volleyball 3-1

CHICO, Calif. — Halloween offered no treats, but a trick for Humboldt State volleyball. The Wildcats of Chico State rallied in each of the final two sets and took a bite out of the Lumberjacks, 3-1, Friday night.

After falling 25-17 in the opening set, HSU (14-6/11-5 California Collegiate Athletic Association) built a seven-point lead and rode it to a 25-18 win to even the match. In the next two sets, the Jacks' late leads vanished as the Wildcats (10-10/8-8 CCAA) fought off three set points (28-26) and went on a run (25-23) for wins to end the match.

"Our team played well at times tonight, but in both the third and fourth sets we failed to finish," said HSU Head Coach Kelly Wood. "Chico State stayed aggressive and we were unable to get it done in the end."

Ashley Owen downed an HSU team-high 14 kills to go with four total blocks.

Middle blocker Alex Hasenstab had one of her best outings of the year. The sophomore hit .400, posted 10 kills and recorded six block assists.

Kaitlyn Dunaway had a double-double with 14 digs and 10 kills. Nicole Bewley was the other double-digit kill hitter with 10.

Kat Rifilato finished with 34 assists. She also had seven kills, six digs and a pair of blocks. Erin Mitchell added 18 assists.

On the defense, Haley Biles and Kelci Renshaw combined to dig 42 attacks and serve three aces.

Leading 13-11 in the first set, the Wildcats scored the next seven points and never let the Jacks get closer than five points in a 25-17 win. Chico State took advantage of 10 HSU attack errors in the set.

With a second set 12-10 advantage, the Jacks killed five points in a row. HSU completed the set win, 25-18, to tie the match.

HSU held a 22-19 lead in the third set. Chico State fought off three set points, before it took the long set, 28-26.

Again in the fourth set, the Jacks led late, 22-18. The Wildcats scored the next six points, and seven of the final eight, for the 25-23 come from behind win and the match, 3-1.

HSU will move down the road for a 7 p.m. Saturday night match at Cal State Stanislaus to end the weekend.
