Jacks Buck Broncos in Straight Sets

Boxscore
ARCATA, Calif. — Humboldt State volleyball registered the first point of the night and never looked back to buck the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos in straight sets, 3-0, Saturday night.

The Lumberjacks (9-4/6-3 California Collegiate Athletic Association) held the Broncos (6-6/4-5 CCAA) under 20 points in each set with scores of 25-16, 25-18 and 25-17. The HSU victory snapped a 15-match losing streak against Cal Poly Pomona dating back to the 2006 season's second meeting.

"It is such a good feeling to win in three and a rarity to do so in our conference. I think the loss on Thursday (3-2 to UC San Diego) motivated us more to perform at a high level tonight," said HSU Head Coach Kelly Wood.

HSU went into the week with only one win in the last 48 matches against its three opponents. The Jacks added a Wednesday night win over No. 8 San Bernardino (3-1) to go with tonight's 3-0 victory over Cal Poly Pomona.

"I am proud and pleased to go 2-1 this week, and 4-1 in the five-match homestand the past two weeks," said Wood. "When our team is playing our game at a high level, we are a challenge to play. We need to play at that high level on a more consistent basis."

The Jacks' defense held the Broncos to a .017 hitting percentage, 24 attack errors and no service aces for the three sets.

"We did a good job serving and passing. Haley Biles had a good night tonight as she anchored our backline," said the HSU coach. ""We made a lot of offensive mistakes, but our defense helped us sideout and stay in control."

Biles paced the defense with 16 digs to go with two assists and an ace.

HSU posted 10 team blocks led by Alex Hasenstab's five block assists.

Ashley Owen downed a match-high 10 kills and recorded four block assists. Symone Hayden chipped in nine kills and three block assists.

Kat Rifilato handed out 18 assists and dug nine attacks. Erin Mitchell had 13 assists. Rounding out the night, Nicole Bewley and Kelci Renshaw laced two aces apiece.

In the first set, HSU ran out to an early 10-4 lead off back-to-back Hayden kills. The home lead grew to 10 points, 18-8, before a Renshaw ace finished the set, 25-16.

Down 15-14, the Jacks netted the next six points to make it 20-15. A few minutes later, Owen pounded a right side kill to give HSU a two-set lead and 25-18 final.

Closing out the night, HSU broke a 5-5 tie by scoring three-straight points to make it 8-5. The home club never trailed the entire set as Bewley downed the final kill on match point, 25-17.

HSU will travel to southern California next week for matches on Friday and Saturday night at Cal State Los Angeles and CSU Dominguez Hills. Both matches start at 7 p.m.
