SAN FRANCISCO -- The Humboldt State men's basketball team played competitively against California Collegiate Athletic Association rival San Francisco State in the first half of Friday evening's meeting, but ran out of gas late in a 67-58 loss.
"We didn't shoot at a very high level tonight. We had a lot of open looks and they did not go down for us," said Head Coach
Steve Kinder. "San Francisco State did a good job with its matchup zone defense."
The Lumberjacks (3-3, 0-3 CCAA) weathered some late offensive outages in the first period and carried a three-point, 30-27, advantage into the locker room. Senior
Austin Bryan led HSU scorers with seven first-half points, all of which came in the game's first three minutes.
HSU was unable to find a spark after the intermission and allowed San Francisco State to go on a 21-6 run through the first eight minutes. The Gators' 6-foot-11 big man AJ Kahlon anchored their defense, but it was Nick Calcaterra who did the damage on offense. Calcaterra paced Gator scorers with 12 second-half points on 4-for-6 shooting. He finished with a team-best 15 points.
The Gators (3-2, 1-0 CCAA) outscored the Jacks 40-28 in the second half and led by a game-high 16 points, 59-43, with 5:03 left in the game. San Francisco State shot 41 percent from the field in the second half and outrebounded HSU 28-18.
Three Jacks logged 10 or more points in the loss.
David Howard and Bryan led the Green and Gold with 12 points apiece and freshman
Malik Morgan added 10 points off the bench.
Rakim Brown pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.
HSU visits Sonoma State Saturday evening looking for its first conference win. The Seawolves defeated the Coyotes of Cal State San Bernardino, 75-58, Friday evening. Saturday's game against the Sonoma State tips off at 7:30 p.m.
"Anybody can beat anybody, any night in the CCAA," said Kinder. "We will have to deal with Sonoma State's home-court advantage tomorrow night. The Seawolves are getting good support at home and they are a well-coached team."
