Gaumer and Shields Combine to Lead Jacks over Gators in CCAA Opener

Gleason Becomes HSU’s Winningest Women’s Basketball Coach

SAN FRANCISCO – Humboldt State's Dani Gaumer and Megan Shields made sure their team started the California Collegiate Athletic Association schedule on a winning note. The two seniors combined for 36 points to lead the Lumberjacks to a 73-57 Friday night win over the Gators of San Francisco State.

Gaumer dropped three 3-pointers in each half for 18 points and Shields posted 18 points inside to pace the Jacks' attack. After seeing its lead cut to a single point at half, HSU (5-1/1-0 CCAA) opened the second half on a 10-2 run. The Jacks added two more runs of at least seven-straight points and never was challenged again by host San Francisco State (0-5/0-1 CCAA).

"We had too many mental breakdowns in the first half and it led to some open shots. We did a better job of making them earn their baskets in the second half and we were stronger defensively and scored points in transition," said HSU Head Coach Joddie Gleason. "We also executed in the second half as we started going to Megan (Shields) inside and then Dani and our shooters hit some outside shots."

With the victory, Gaumer and Shields helped their coach become the HSU women's basketball program's winningest coach. In her 11th season at the helm, Gleason recorded her 170th win in 287 games and surpassed former head coach Pam Martin (1987-2001) and her 169 wins.

"It feels good (to reach the milestone)," said Gleason. "It is a tribute to the great players we have had in the program. The award goes to the entire HSU basketball family dating back to 2004 and all the work each team put in."

After hitting only eight 3-pointers in the team's first five games, Gaumer drained 6-of-9 long-range attempts Friday night. The guard's 18-point performance was one point shy of her career-high set last Jan. 11 at home against the same San Francisco State team. She also pulled down five rebounds and handed out three assists.

"It was nice," said Gaumer. "We know we are good and we came out and made a statement tonight."

"Dani is a tireless worker. She is in the gym all summer and gets in that extra workout. It is good for her to get the reward (of that hard work)," said Gleason.

Shields banked home nine baskets for her third 18-plus point night in the past four games. She posted her first double-double of the season with 12 rebounds to go with her point total.

A'Jaee Foster missed her third double-double by two points. The forward finished with eight points and 11 rebounds to go with two assists and two steals.

Amanda Kunst hit 3-of-6 tries including a 3-pointer for her season-high nine-point night.

Kersey Wilcox recorded an all-around effort. The point guard had five points, seven assists, four steals and three rebounds. Jae Shin added three assists, two points and two steals.

Neika Puryear and Nikki Powell chipped in six points each, respectively.

The Gators' Savannah Camp led all scorers with 22 points and pulled down 12 rebounds.

Tied at eight, the Jacks scored 13 of the next 15 points and never trailed again. Shields accounted for four of the 13 points in the run and Wilcox assisted on the final three buckets and two free throws to open a 21-10 margin over the Gators at 8:13 in the first half.

Trailing 29-18 after a Kunst triple, San Francisco State scored the final 10 first-period points over the final three minutes to cut the difference to a single point, 29-28, at half.

With two Shields baskets, HSU started the second half with a 10-2 run in the first 3:13 for a 39-30 lead. Gaumer downed back-to-back 3-pointers two minutes later for a 13-point margin, 49-36.

San Francisco State cut the margin to seven, 56-49, with 9:44 left, but could get no closer to HSU.

The Jacks complete their road weekend Saturday night. HSU faces rival Sonoma State in a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
