Box Score LA JOLLA – Humboldt State received over half its points from its bench to glide past UC San Diego, 63-50, Saturday night, led by
Jain Tuey's career-high 16 points.
Tuey led the Lumberjacks to run out to an early double-digit lead they would not give up over the final 30 minutes of play in the win over the Tritons.
"I think our defense fueled our offense tonight. The defense played with urgency and executed the defensive plan very well," said HSU head coach
Joddie Gleason.
The HSU defense held the UCSD to four of 21 shooting and only 15 points in the first half. For the game, the Jacks held the Tritons to just over 30-percent (15 of 49) shooting and the Jacks won the rebounding battle (42-32).
The Jacks (10-8/7-7 California Collegiate Athletic Association) record their first road league weekend sweep of the season. The victory also snapped a three-game losing streak in the series against UC San Diego (11-7/8-6 CCAA).
The HSU story of the night was its bench crew, with five players off the bench scoring 33 of the team's 63 points and grabbing 18 rebounds.
"I know it is a team game, and it was especially important for the bench to step up with us getting in foul trouble quickly. They did a great job and were able to continue both defensively and scoring for us," said Gleason.
The visitors' leader was senior Tuey. The wing player provided offense in not only the first half, but also the second. She downed two early first-half triples for seven points, before she added two more 3-pointers in the latter stanza for another nine points and her career-best 16 points. She also pulled down three caroms.
"Jain hit some huge shots when we needed it," noted Gleason. "Amanda (Kunst) was also huge on the glass for us."
Kunst was the Jacks' top rebounder with nine, including five on the offensive end. The sophomore added seven points.
Elle Anderson chipped in six points and three boards.
Sumayyah Wiggins had four points, and
Jessica Johnson grabbed two rebounds.
Despite not scoring in the first half, center
Megan Shields finished with 10 points. She also had six rebounds, two assists and two blocked shots.
Stephanie Yano and Erin Dautremont had the UC San Diego scoring lead with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
The Tritons' Megan Perry downed a game-opening 3-pointer 1:15 into the game. It was the only lead UCSD would have in the game. A
Kersey Wilcox layup and a Dani Gaumer 3-pointer started a 14-0 run over the next six minutes and 14-3 lead.
The Jacks were not done. In fact, they continued to build the difference to 18 points, 25-7, on a Wiggins reverse layup at 3:39. UC San Diego netted eight of the final 10 points for the 27-15 intermission tally.
Unlike other recent games, HSU had no letdown.
Over the opening eight minutes of the second half, HSU built the lead back to the largest of the night, 45-24, capped by back-to-back Tuey triples.
HSU would lead by as many as 20 points, 52-32, on a Kunst putback, before coasting to the 63-50 final.
The Jacks will look to continue the solid play next week at home. HSU will start by playing Cal State East Bay on Thursday night with a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
