Jacks open CCAA play against Coyotes

ARCATA – Following a perfect first week of the season, Humboldt State dives into the California Collegiate Athletic Association schedule this weekend.

The Jacks take on the second of three road legs to begin the year when they travel to face the Coyotes of Cal State San Bernardino in the first four-game series starting Friday at noon for the first doubleheader.

HSU completes nine-win first week under coach Sarchett

The Jacks could not have started the 2014 and first season at the helm under new head coach Shelli Sarchett. HSU opened the week with road sweeps at Notre Dame de Namur (4-3 (8) and 5-1) and Academy of Art (11-3, 3-2).

HSU headed further south to Las Vegas and found the same type of succes. Over the three-day weekend, the North Coast club rallied in two of the five wins over Hawi'i at Hilo (12-11), Montana State Billings (4-3), Simon Fraser (6-4), New Mexico Highlands (13-8) and Colorado School of Mines (7-4).


Hollingsworth earns CCAA Softball Player of the Week honors

Hollingsworth helped the No. 4-ranked Lumberjacks begin to the program's best start in eight seasons with a 9-0 undefeated run. The San Leandro, Calif. native played a key role in beginning of the opening week perfection with a top of the seventh inning two-run home run to tie in the eventual 4-3 victory in eight innings over Notre Dame de Namur.
 
For the five games of the Desert Stinger Tournament held in Las Vegas last weekend, the freshman recorded an even better average against higher-rated competition. The infielder lined eight hits in 17 at bats for a .471 average including three multi-hit outings and a three-hit game against Simon Fraser.
 
Over 30 at bats in the nine contests, Hollingsworth produced a .433 average with 13 hits, 12 runs, three doubles, two homers, nine RBI and a .733 slugging percentage. Tiffany drew three walks, was hit by a pitch four times and held a .526 on base percentage.
 
In five separate days of action, Hollingsworth totaled four multiple hit efforts with lining a hit, scoring a run and driving in a Jacks runner in eight of the nine contests.


Jacks showing home run knack again

After setting the NCAA Division II season record for home runs last year, HSU has picked up where it left off. The Jacks blasted 20 home runs in their nine-game first week of the season.

The HSU 20 home runs lead the CCAA team ranks by 12 home runs to the nearest team of eight by its upcoming opponent in CSU San Bernardino.

HSU saw both Dani Randall and Julie Pena belt four round-trippers apiece with Hannah Williams hitting three of her own.


Obbema tough on the mound

The CCAA Freshman of the Year, Katie Obbema started her sophomore year in a big way. The second-year Jacks pitcher recorded a 5-0 record with one save in six first-week appearances. Obbema logged 31.2 innings where she had a 2.56 ERA and 17 strikeouts.


Scouting CSU San Bernardino:

• After winning 18 games in each of the last two seasons, the Coyotes have started off with five wins in their opening seven contests.

CSU San Bernardino swept past No. 12-ranked St. Martin's in two close contests, 3-1 and 3-2, before heading to the same Desert Stinger Tournament in Las Vegas.

In Las Vegas, the Coyotes went 3-2 with a win over the same Colorado School of Mines (9-0), which the Jacks finished the weekend defeating. CSU San Bernardino added wins over Western Oregon (6-5) and University of Mary (11-3), but dropped decisions to Central Washington (10-7) and No. 23 Dixie State (8-0).

• Head coach Tracy Duncan is in her ninth-year directing the Coyotes program. She enters the weekend with a 191-211-1 mark over her time at the helm including a 108-121 CCAA record.

• INF Nicole Nobbe leads the Coyotes with a .524 average in 21 at bats.

• C Tiffany McIntosh belted a team-high three home runs in the first week and holds a .429 batting average

• P Cassandrea Williams leads the pitching staff. She recorded a 4-2 mark over 22.1 innings with 14 strikeouts in the first week.
